    9600gt - Crap 2d

    Hello,

I've just bought a 9600GT and I'm really dissapointed with the 2D performance.

I have dual 20.1" monitors, they're running at 1680 x 1050 @ 60Hz, and I can only describe what I'm seeing as shimmery/sparkly. It's also as if I'm not 'really' running 32bit, I have the aurora background and it looks cack. I'm actually considering sending the card back and returning to my 6600GT.

I'm running the latest drivers, I can't think what would be causing this but it's not up to scratch for a £120 graphics card.

    Please help.

    laze.

    Re: 9600gt - Crap 2d

it could be a problem with the card, or maybe the card temps?
have you checked the temperature of the card? have you checked the fan is spinning up?
    what exactly are you seeing?
does it look like some of the pixels are darker or lighter than they should be? 'cause that's usually what happens when i OC my memory on my GFX card too far..

the 9600GT should be able to run 3360 x 1050 2D with absolutely no problems at all..
i run a 2560 x 1024 reso with absolutely no problems at all with my 8800GT..

    Re: 9600gt - Crap 2d

It may be a case of me looking back through rose tinted glasses but I'll explain what I see anyway...

    1. The fan is working

    2. The temperature is 42c

    3. Specs of lighter pixels flickered equally across the entire screen.

    laze.

    Re: 9600gt - Crap 2d

    Take a look at this

Diagnose your video card problems by comparing with example corrupted screens

there's quite a few screen shots of gfx card artifacts, if you see any that match your's then it tells you what the likely problem is.

    Re: 9600gt - Crap 2d

    Hey rufeo,

Thanks for the link, it's nothing as serious as artifacts. What else can I compare it too... Say, when you look at a bright light for too long and then look away, similar to that.

For all I know it could just be my eyes, as they're notoriously crap, and a change in bright/contrast/gamma due to the new card. Perhaps I've lost the plot, but light colours in particular seem... fuzzy/snowy. I still think 'shimmering' is the best word though, heh.

    laze.

You're not on CRT monitors are you? that sort of thing would happen on crt monitors when there was refresh rate problems.

Does this problem happen when only one monitor is pluged in?

    Re: 9600gt - Crap 2d

    Hello,

I'm using a pair of flatscreen DELL 2005FPWs.

I've tried a couple of things since I last posted:

Removed all PCI cards from the motherboard in case they were interfeering somehow - no change.

Tried a different monitor, also a TFT - no change

Used the VGA convertor and ran a VGA signal to my monitor - nasty, I can actually see the text in your messages jiggling side to side - wtf?

I'm using two monitors Biscuit, I doubt both DVI cables are faulty?!

I'm now going to try the motherboard's onboard video and see if there's an obvious difference between the two.

    laze.

    hey

i'm still trying to get my head around what you're seeing on the screen.... don't know if i'm being stupid or not very imaginative... but have you heard of the screen-door effect? people describe it as 'looking through a screendoor'. there's pictures on the web and the screen looks kinda of meshy and is all across the screen

    Re: 9600gt - Crap 2d

    Hey,

It doesn't look meshy, it's quite disorientating actually. It looks... almost like the screens had polish on it that hasn't been wiped off properly.

It's not an issue when playing games but when I'm on a website with lots of white space it's awful. I don't know if it's some kind of interfence?

I'll explain the entire scenario now otherwise we'll all get confused.

I was initially using a Abit UL8 with a Geforce 6600GT but after moving in with my girlfriend I took her machine, a ASROCK Conroe945-DVI with onboard video, with the intention of selling my machine. To make it workable I bought a 9600GT for her machine.

I cannot remember the screens being this bad with my 6600GT, they're causing me to have really bad headaches, it is as if the HZ is really low and as mentioned it's quite disorientating. It's like a very small amount of electrical noise across the entire screen.

I never used it (my girlfriend's machine) in length with the onboard, so I hadn't noticed this issue before, but, as promised I did go back to onboard and the problem remains.

It's really killing me now, it's there when the machine is first switched on too, only it's not as noticeable due to the fact the screen's black.

I'm at the point where I'm considering buying a new motherboard, could the motherboard be the problem?

Anyone who has any ideas, even if you think they're silly, please suggest them.

    laze.

However if it's a problem with the screen display it might not show up.
    Good idea to try though.
Also might be an idea to take a picture of the screen and post that as well.

    Re: 9600gt - Crap 2d

If it is caused by the screen then it will no show up in a screen-shot if it is caused by the graphics card/motherboard then it will be screen-shotable.

Since you experience the same issue with the on board graphics it suggests either a screen or motherboard issue, and since you have to screens with the same issue that you didn't have previously that screams motherboard.
