Intels says GPUs days numbered
TG Daily - People “probably won’t” need discrete graphics cards anymore – Intel
So apparently they want devs to code for CPUs instead of GPUs. Now that is what I'd call "trying to create your market".
I'll believe it when I see some games run on integrated.
Re: Intels says GPUs days numbered
In order to get games looking like movies, raytracing is needed. This can be done completely via the CPU, thus making GPU's redundant. But nvidia and AMD might do raytracing better than Intel. It's just a case of waiting to see who wins.
Re: Intels says GPUs days numbered
I expect the GPU could be optimised to raytrace better than a CPU could.

Well it depends on what you define a GPU as really. If you're talking about today's tech, then yeah they will be redundant if raytracing takes off in this way (given enough time)
Raytracing isn't ideally suited to today's GPU's, but if raytracing starts to take off do you think AMD/NV would just sit on their current tech? They'll be looking to get in on the market to. If they need to change their GPU architecture to do this, they will.
Raytracing also scales really well on multi-processor systems :)

John Carmack disagrees:

*YAWN*
Why do i get the feeling Intel is trying to catch up to AMD here? Fusion, anyone?

Is that the project that got frozen while AMD tried to claw back any semblance of a CPU release? :p
Re: Intels says GPUs days numbered
frozen? it's still being worked on - X-bit claim they plan to put it first into laptops pretty soon, iirc.
Re: Intels says GPUs days numbered
I really can't see this happening realistically within at least the next 5 years. Laptops, yes integrated graphics, Intel Extreme graphics etc... but not built into the CPU itself.
I suppose it would be possible to design a quad-core CPU with 2 cores working as the normal CPU and another two working specifically for graphics (this could still be technically considered separate).
So, to sum up my thoughts - the day my 3D workstation has no need for a graphics card, I'll eat it :p
