    9800GTX vs 8800GT

I am looking for a new graphics card and have narrowed it down to one of these two:

    BFG 9800 GTX @ £205
    BFG 8800 GT @ £131 (625MHz / 1800MHz)

Obviously the 9800 GTX is better, but how much better? Is it worth the difference in price. I obviously expect the priceerformance to be worse in the 9800, but I want to buy something that will last a long time without having to be replaced.

I will be playing at only low resolutions (1280x1024) but possibly on two montors (e.g. two instances of EVE-Online OR Supreme Commander in dualview).

    I will not be overclocking.

I understand that both of these cards run on the G92 chip and thus have the same features (Shader 4, OpenGL 2.1).

Any advice is much appreciated, thanks!

If you are not looking to reupgrade when the real next gen come out imo you should go with the 9800gtx

    Re: 9800GTX vs 8800GT

Im in a similar situation, 9800GTX or 8800GTS?

Im favouring towards the 8800GTS mainly due to its cheaper prices. I'll be running at 1920x1200 so the 9800GTX is again looking like a better option.

I guess for you , the best you can afford at the moment

At that resolution the 8800GT is fine.

If you are planning on upgrading resolution soon then get the 9800GTX

    Re: 9800GTX vs 8800GT

I'm sure either one will be "fine" at running todays games at 1280x1024, but that's not what I'm asking. I want something that will be able to play the games of the future, and I know that the 9800GTX is better... just how much better is it than the 8800GT?

well 9800gtx will be more future proof, drivers may develop and improve preformance ect. the extra pipelines also help.

    Re: 9800GTX vs 8800GT

none are future proof, the 9800 is less because the new 4000 series and 9900series will probably kill it. Id say get a 8800gt or gts and wait, not worth an extra £70, sli 2 9600 and u get better bang for buck.

    Re: 9800GTX vs 8800GT

Thanks, I've looked into the 9900 a bit and it looks like it will be a real beast. Have decided to go for the cheap option (8800 GT) and possibly upgrade when the 9900 GTX comes out. My old card is a 7900 GT, so the 8800 is probably 2x better than it, and a 9900 will be 2x better than the 8800...

    Sorted.

    Re: 9800GTX vs 8800GT

at 1280x1024 it is better to get the 8800gt. the 9800gtx would only really shine at higher resolutions.
