    HD3870 to 8800GT?

can someone plkease help? i'm thinking of swapping my Gecube HD3870 X-Turbo III OC Edition to get an 8800GT... is it worth it though?

cos i wanted to run an 3870X2 in Xfire as well later on, but i'm on a P35 board and will suffer as a result of the reduced bandwith, meaning that the second slot is pretty much a farce for me...

should i go ahead and make the switch?

If your 3870 is doing the job for you now there is no need to switch...

    Re: HD3870 to 8800GT?

yes but only if you sell me your gecube for a good price

    But in seriousness, depends.
Are you unhappy with your gecube's performance?
The 8800gt is faster but not by much so would a few more fps make that much differnce to you?
I'm not sure how much you'd lose not haveing full x16 on crossfire but I suspect that it's not much.
Do you mean running two 3870x2 or two 3870 ?

not worth it imo, when you have 1 3870 i wouldnt recomend a switch as the only real difference is with crysis but thats just one game, sure if you can make it a switch for free and its a good 8800 make too/.

The latest ATI 8.3 hotfix drivers make a big difference in Crysis and COD4 as the minimum framerates increase - this was due to a powerplay issue!

My 975X can only run at PCI-E 8X even with one card - it does seem to make much of a difference IMHO !

    Re: HD3870 to 8800GT?

The was an article on Anandtech (i think) comparing the effects of PCIe bandwidth and the move from 16x to 8x wasn't really that much of an issue dropping to 4x is probably more of a problem but while you would see less performance compared to duel 16x crossfire you will still have a performance increase and with 3870s falling in price that is probably where the smart money is.

    Re: HD3870 to 8800GT?

    Actually there's one compairing 975x (8x8x) with a P35 (16x4x) and it's still not much different
Problem is the artical is old so how much differnce card and drivers will make is a bit of an unknown.

    Re: HD3870 to 8800GT?

i got the 8800GT and it was exactly the same thing... Pretty sad as i could have gotten the GTS, but chose to get this (believing the OC would help - it doesn't do much) and 2 extra gigs of ram who don't want to run on my mobo...

    ah well... life lesson learned

@Brewster - the card was sold the same day this thread was created
