both can be had for around £180-£190, which one is best?
taking into consideration speed and temperature.
thanks![]()

This review suggests the 8800 is actually the better of the two in most cases but very similar in performance.

I'd Imagine the 9800 runs a bit cooler but then again it requires 2x 6/8pin pcie power cables so it must still use a fair bit of power.
I think most people are anticipating a 9900GTX and GX2 very soon, not sure if those claims hold water.
in my opinion, the 9800GTX would be best if overclocking but the 8800GTX still holds its own, better too get a bfg 8800GTS imo though as its only £160 ~
well i've decided to bite the bullet and buy before the end of the month, so im not gonna do anymore waiting, already waited 4months lol.
thanks for the link, the review says the 9800gtx power draw is not that much higher than the 8800 gts and its temp is much cooler.
looking at the comparison between the 8800gts and the 8800gtx it might be better to make my choice between the 8800gts and the 9800gtx instead.
thanks for your input![]()
No competition.
The 8800GTX is the better card. The extra memory on it makes all the difference.
I havent seen anything credible to the contrary.
They can be had for under £200 now aswell.
As far as the GTS goes, look here: HEXUS.net - Review :: NVIDIA (BFG) GeForce 9800 GTX. Got £200 for a graphics card? Read this : Page - 1/10
There is no reason to buy a 9800GTX............the 8800GTX is better.
The 8800GTS 512mb is a very tiny fraction slower and is also available for under £160 if you look around).
This new 9800 card shouldve been called a 9800GTS........a GTX is DEFINITELY is not!
(also , and i realise they are synthetic benchmarks, but the 8800GTS G92 produces higher 3D Mark scores aswell.
I disagree with that.
The 8800GTS G92 will overclock just aswell as the 9800GTX
@ blitzen, my card can only get too 1100mhz ram, when the 9800's are clocked stock at that?, everything else is on par with the 8800gts though, was refering too the 8800GTX for overclocking though, as the 9800 has higher clocks and so does the gts.
All the reviews I've read (HardOCP, hardware canucks, Anandtech, etc) show that although the 9800GTX does suffer from less RAM and a narrower memory bus, it still beats the 8800GTX in virtually every situation, even at high resolutions, it just doesn't give the expected boost when AA is enabled for example.
The GTX does overclock higher because it has a superior cooler, and better memory chips (Samsung 8ns).
Agreed it is not the performance boost we should have been given by Nvidia. At £210 on launch though it ain't too bad in my book.
Ihave read a fair reviews aswell abd none of them say its a step up from a 8800GTX, In fact they say its not as fast.
Take a look at the Hexus one aswell if you havent seen it yet.![]()
Hmmm... it just seems contrary to everything else I have read.... the 9800GTX beats the 8800GTX in some of their tests.... but why use only 3 games? Not much of a test.... and why Lost Planet? Does anyone play it? Why does the HD3870X2 do so badly when everyone else says it is better than that? Why the discrepancy in their results in that the 9800 comes out ahead by a way with 4xaa and 16xaf at high resolution in one game, when everyone else has found it only edges it in those circumstances by a narrow margin? Why did the 8800GTS do so poorly even though in reviews when it was released it nailed the 8800GTX? Seems suspect to me personally, the majority of reviews I have read have shown the 9800 to easily surpass the 8800GTX and Ultra in virtually all circumstances, but I am certainly open to changing my mind if you can dig up any more reviews mate.
A good way to solve this would be to buy an 8800GTX to send to me and I'll test it myself.....![]()
