Poor FPS and performance with 8800GTS-512mb

    Hey guys,

I'm experiencing a really poor performance from my brand new ASUS 8800GTS; its the 512mb version and tbh it's really weird. Systems specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
    RAM: 2GB 800MHz Corsair
    OS: WinXP Pro SP2
    GFX: ASUS 8800GTS-512
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 500GB SATA II
    MOBO: Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L
    PSU: SilverStone Strider 500W (ST50F)

Basically my old hard drive which was a clunky old IDE got its boot sector corrupted and rather than lose all my data, I bought a new one and transferred all the files across. I did a fresh winxp install on the new hard drive on a seperate partition to the one with all the recovered files on it. Ever since re-installing winxp I have had this problem, so it leads me to believe that it has to be a driver/software issue. I've installed the latest nvidia drivers, and also tried omega drivers with no difference. Latest directx 9.0c and I've even reflashed my BIOS to ensure there are no bottlenecks. PSU Is working fine and the PCI-E connectors are on a different rail to the HDD/Optical rail.

Quake 4 gives me around 60fps in normal environments but as soon as a bad guy pops out or a door opens it lags like hell down to 10-15fps. World of Warcraft is much the same, as soon as I enter a heavily populated area I get a really low 15-20 fps, but the rest of the time it's fine.

I have even tried using the ASUS software supplied with the gfx card to try and overclock it with no success, the performance ingame was just the same which makes me think its a software thing even more. The IDE channels are set to DMA and... yeah... I can't think what else it could be! Please help!!

Sorry to sound like a complete nub begging for help but I'm completely out of ideas!

did you remember to put the card in a pci slot? or are you just sat looking at it.

^^hey it might sound stupid but it took me a while to figure out why my comp wasn't recognising my extra RAM, bloomin late nights

bit of a shock when i noticed it was still in the blister packaging

lol... yeah its in the pci-e slot. Computer can definitely see it as I can OC it and install drivers for it, but with no improvement on performance.

    goodo, just checking

try putting the card into a different pci-e slot (if you have a second that is)

and as Jay says, make sure you have the latest chipset drivers and things.

Re: Poor FPS and performance with 8800GTS-512mb

    christov,

I have seen problems very similar to these and apparently it can be down to the PSU not giving the GFX card enough 'juice', especially as you notice it more when the GFX card is being used more heavily & thus at that time it needs more power! Can you try any other 'decent' psu?

Hope you find out whats causing the problem

hmm could be... but the PSU seems to be working ok. Any way I can test it? I don't have another decent one to hand unfortunately.

Make sure Quake 4 is set to dual core mode. I had a similar problem with my Quad and that fixed it
    I dunno about Crysis though.

Re: Poor FPS and performance with 8800GTS-512mb

How do I set quake4 into dual core mode? That could be whats causing the slowness....

    Heres some 3dmark06 results btw:
    ORB - World of Performance

The results seem fine so I really don't know what else it could be!

And no I don't have a friends machine that has a decent enough CPU or PSU to keep up with ths thing!

Re: Poor FPS and performance with 8800GTS-512mb

Have you checked the CPU configuration? I am wondering if you are underclocked or only using one core. I found a 6600GT was fine wandering around Shattratth in WoW so you would need to be losing an awful lot of grunt on an 8800 before you could feel any lag.

Another thing to check is thermal effects, the CPU and GPU can both throttle back if they think they are getting uncomfortably warm. Use ntune to check the GPU temperature and hopefully something came with your motherboard to check the CPU temperature during gameplay. Did this problem happen to coincide with the sun coming out recently and the weather getting warmer?

If the graphics card is new it could be heating up the inside of your machine more than it used to be.

Re: Poor FPS and performance with 8800GTS-512mb

I did consider the possibility it could be an overheating issue... and yes it did seem to co-incide with the weather getting warmer.

Checking ntune and gpu/cpu temps they seem to be normal so I'm not too worried, during gaming the fans do come on now that I've tweaked the settings but they don't rise far.

CPU is definitely using two cores, the config in the BIOS is default one, can't seem to change it to anything useful unfortunately.

Re: Poor FPS and performance with 8800GTS-512mb

    Just some suggestions:

    a) Check your cables (esp PCIe power) are plugged in securely.

    b) Not sure if there's such option but maybe a bios configuration of the PCIe slot where it's not running in full x16. Maybe it's running at a slower rate x4 or 8x perhaps.

    c) Memory problems with gpu or reconfiguring page file in Windows/vista

    d) Other BIOS options (or as a last resort clear the bios to default setting)

do you have it set to max anti aliasing, max filtering and at monster resolution?

I mean the nvidia control panel, not the game?
