    FX5600 ultra, about £130
or an at..no i wont make u buy any of that ati rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish, get an FX

or a ti4800, about £120 - they are 8x but they work fine with a 4X mobo, as steve said 8x is just a gimmick that lets Nvidia rename their cards

ATi have good hardware (in the main) but their drivers are pants

I dont trust ATI, after lots of probs with their earlier cards...i went nvida and have had zero problems ever since, worth going with the market leaders on this one, unless you're feeling lucky and want to gamble your hard earned cash on an Ati card, even the name ATI doesnt sound as smooth as 'Nvidia'

load of rubbish, use your head, go nvidia

(NB this is my opinion, and while backed up by some fact i'm sure ppl will disagree which is fine, but its their loss tbh)

I'd say that ATI's drivers being poor is a myth carried over from Rad8500 days esp from when they manipulated the drivers to auto detect the Quake3 engine. They weren't quite fast enough back then ... tables have turned and now it is nVidia cheating with their drivers. Anyhow modern ATI drivers are every bit as good as nVidia's. Take it from someone who has lots of experience with both. IMHO the 'driver' issue is not a relevant argument as whether to go with ATI or nVidia. Choose your card by price and merits.

The GF-FX5600ultra is overall even with the Rad9600pro, both are fine choice although the 9600pro should be a fair bit cheaper. Both of these cards are 'only' as fast as a GF4TI4200 until you get into DX9 or AA+AF so you can make quite a saving by investing in a GF4TI card.

AGP8x offers practicly zero perf improvement over AGP4x, the added bandwisth simply isn't needed even by the top cards. AGP8x cards will ALL run happily in AGP4x mode so don't dismiss them, just don't think you shouldn't buy one because you have a 4x mobo.

At the mo the top choices are GF4TI4200 (£90) but it's only DX8 (not a problem yet) and can handle only 2xAA+4xAF without serious perf penalty. GF-FX5600ultra and Rad9600pro give you a number of enhancements and should pull away fromt he 4200 in future games, they also have DX9 and can handle 4xAA+8xAF easily. The other options are really GF4TI4800SE which is roughly 10% faster than a 4200 or an enhanced 4200 using the longer 8 layer design and BGA RAM like the Suma Special Edition or Albatron P Turbo. The 4200-8X cards should come with faster clocks and o/c all the better. Basicly htese are all good choices, if you plan to keep the card for a while I'd rec a DX9 card.

Get a 9600 Pro with 2.2ns Hynix stuff on it, overclock it to buggery with the tool that comes with the omega drivers built on catalyst 3.6, and you'll have possibly the best value gfx for under £120.

Nice, where was that from Byatt and what o/c can it do?

Basicly the FX5600 and FX5600ultra are identical except one is simply faster than the other. The speed diff is quite large, FX5600 is down in Rad8500 territory (or below but with rather useless DX9) while FX5600ultra and Rad9600pro are easily in GF4TI4200 territory except you get DX9 and much better AA+AF. Given pricing I'd suggest the Rad9600pro for around £120.

i got a 9700 for £172 and its modded to a 9700 pro just by using the tweaked cat 3.6s it started off at 270/270 but now its at core 344.25 and mem 324.00 with rage3d tweaker first 3d mark i got 13,000s now im just about to break the 16,000 barrier
my fx5600 is a 275/275 card but with the new dets it can easy change to 325/275 but i ran it at 330/285 stable
whereas my 64mb ti 4200 could clock at 300/300 and score 13,000 on 3d mark 2001
value wise the ti 4200 s for £60 are real bargains
