Need a Graphics Card £80 and under

    Ok Guys.

I got an X1900GT with HDCP and was nice and quiet and cool, however it was fussy and didn't like my motherboard at all. So have had to get rid of it.

So I'm looking for a graphics card that is single slot, quiet (which unfortunately rules out 8800GS), and has full HDCP support and ideally onboard HDMI processing (so I can use a DVI-HDMI adapter), i.e. onboard cheapo sound unit so I can link it to my TV via HDMI cable

Single slot and Quiet are my main priorities as I've got a fairly good pc set-up at the moment in my SFF case.

My monitor is a 22inch 1680x1050 jobby, and I will be using it for gaming (I like everything turned on full at the max. resolution) but only play Steam, BF2, BF2142, IL2:Stumovich and will be using it for HD DVD playback, so if it takes the load off my CPU then thats a good thing

    PC atm (ignore sig)
    E4500 @ 2.5Ghz
    2Gb PC6400 RAM
    Abit N73HD Motherboard (onboard HDMI)
    Hiper Type-R 580W PSU

I don't mind waiting a bit, I know the 8800GS are stonking value for the price but they are a bit noisy from what I have read. I did have a 8800GT for a brief time and although it was a bit too expensive and over powered for me at the time, it did run cool and quiet (again single slot)

    Cheers

PS. I ideally want to spend less but want something on par with or better than an X1900

THIS 3850 (512mb) should be great, but I'm not sure if the fan actually sticks out a bit to take up space in the second slot (even though the card itself seems to be single slot)

    It's ~£85 from MD

In fact Ebuyer seems to have a Gecube version for £81 del

I think a 8600gts might even be a good option.

I've noticed a 3850 512mb for £77 delivered! which seems like a good deal but it has that dual slot cooler, its a bit annoying as I need to have space in the nearby slot as I have a PCI USB card there, although it is small the card and heatsink would no doubt interact
That one you linked with the older style zalman heatsink could just about miss the pci card, but its not really worth the risk and hassle of having to send it all back

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Just got this for my media center PC for £53, comes with a DVI - HDMI adaptor.
Don't know what it's like to run though, only seen the bios screen through it

Re: Need a Graphics Card £80 and under

They are interesting the 3650, but I think they will be a bit underpowered for what I need, ideally looking for something with 384 or 512 memory as well just to help with the spangly effects at my resolution.

I've been out of the game for a bit and was just wondering whether any of your eagle eyed people had spotted some good deals

in the for sale section on heXus theres 1 (granted it's for £90 so slightly over budget...but well worth it)

    GPU: XFX 8800GTS XT 320MiB
    HERE

edit: sorry, i just noticed you said single slot
edit2: just noticed that you've posted on the same thread :S
edit3: you could get an aftermarket cooler but thats just adding cost and trying to fit an aftermarket bendy wobbly contortionate thing in a SFF might be difficult

problem is there arent many (if any) decent after market single slot coolers that can meet the demands of the more recent graphics cards, and as you stated they add cost

Scan had the HD3850 512mb for around 70 quid on Special Offer recently so i maybe worth waiting for this!! The 8800GS 384MB is also not to bad.It has been recently renamed the 9600GSO BTW!

Thats the thing I think 8800GS is stonking good value but I fear the fan would be too loud, as it isn't controllable and it spins at 100% all the time on most, because it is clocked so high.

Well if you can wait this just re-appeared on scan recently.
*edit* scrub that, 2 slots needed

There are some scheap 9600's at ebuyer though if you can strech your budget

Re: Need a Graphics Card £80 and under

Ta man I think that deserves another thanks

For the right card I will sacrifice the PCI Slot next door but I'd rather not. The 9600's seem good but doesnt a 3850 perform on par or better than them?

I'll read up on the 9600 Armor as it looks like it has a nice big fan, so will need to find out about noise.

    Cheers

I know the 2600XT is a bit 'old' but it seems ok performance wise (>8600) and from what I've seen it can be picked up relatively cheap as well But I'm guessing it would start to struggle at my resolution.

EDIT 2: Also just thought If it does require additional power by means of a PCI-e connector I'd prefer it to be at the top of the card as the 8800 rather than in the middle etc, just helps me install it as my case is fairly small (SG01-e)

Re: Need a Graphics Card £80 and under

Noise of the 9600 looks good
XFX GeForce 9600 GT XXX 512MB review
It's got the standard cooler on it so you'd think the noise wouldn't be different across the range.

It looks like the 9600GT performs better than the 3850s to
Diamond Viper Radeon HD 3850 Ruby edition

I know that review won't represent all of the range but it's a way behind.

For the right card I will sacrifice the PCI Slot next door but I'd rather not. The 9600's seem good but doesnt a 3850 perform on par or better than them?

I'll read up on the 9600 Armor as it looks like it has a nice big fan, so will need to find out about noise.

I went from a X1900gt revision 2 card to an HD3870 and I consider it an excellent upgrade!!. The HD3850 512mb is only slightly slower than a HD3870 but is much cheaper!! The HD3870 is slightly better than a 9600gt with AA off BTW.

According to silentpcreview the single slot HD3850 256mb cooler is relatively quiet. Some of the HD3850 512mb cards have the same cooler.

Check this link for more details:
