New GFXard time. Advice required please.

I'm looking to update my system for the release of Conan next week. I'm happy with everything apart from my current gfx card, an X1950 XTX PE.

I'm a little out of the loop as usual when it comes to GFX cards and I'm not sure what the best bang per buck cards are at the moment.

I was looking at Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK seems good value to me, but like I said, I'm behind the times at the moment

Is this a good card or could I get a better one for the same money? Not fussed whether it's ATI or Nvidia

Also will this card work in my mobo ok? I've noticed some new cards say they only work in 16x PCI-E boards. Is an Asus Commando a 16x board?

    Thanks for any help

Re: New GFXard time. Advice required please.

Since you seem to be running at 1920 x 1200, I would go for a slightly higher end card. 8800GTS 512mb will prove better at that resolution and the 8800GTX/9800GTX would be even better, even when considering it in bangs for bucks.

I believe the next gen cards will be out next month anyway so it might be worth waiting.. you have a pretty nice card anyway.

They'll be fine in a 16x slot which I believe the commando is.

Re: New GFXard time. Advice required please.

Thanks for the advice Yup I'm running at 1900 x 1200

I'll keep my current card for the time being and see how well it runs Conan. I've not played a PC game since I quite WoW about 7-8 months back, so I thought it would be a little behind now.

Don't really want to spend a massive amount on a new card as it will be only for playing Conan. I'll take a look at a GTS if I decide to go ahead with the upgrade.

    Thanks again.

Maybe you should hold of a couple of weeks or a month till the new ati cards are out, new cards will mean the old ones will come down in price too. See how you current card peforms i guess. If it aint up to the job then do as staffsmike suggested

Do you think both nVidia and ATI will be out by then or just one of them??

are they likely to be any real improvement compared to the current things (as we saw with nVidia's 9xxx which wasn't really anything new except a dual board GX2)

The new ATi card from leaked benchmarks is better than the GX2

Re: New GFXard time. Advice required please.

I've decided to get a new card after all. Conan is not running smooth enough for my liking and I don't really want to put the settings down any more than I have done already.

I've got around £200 to spend on a new card, so if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to share them

I'd still advise waiting until the dust settles from the new releases next month, but right now I guess you're in 9800GTX or HD3870 X2 (if you add £30) territory.

In case the original poster sees this message. A guy on DearWandy forums is selling a 8800GTX for £120, with pics and he's a regular poster so it's probably a safe bet as far as buying second hand goes. I have no connection with the buyer at all, just thought I'd mention it as an option:

Trouble with waiting is that there is always something new just around the corner. Is the ATI card you mentioned better than the Nvidia one?
