need help want to get a new monitor
hi i have around 150 quid to spend and want to upgrade from my viewsonic 19 inch widescreen
i would like to have a 22 incher and was looking at Acer X222W 22" Widescreen TFT Monitor 5ms 2500:1 Contrast Ratio
what are your thoughts for gaming/moving watching?
Re: need help want to get a new monitor
From the specs it looks like a tn panel, so the colours won't be as accurate as a pva or ips panel. also the viewing angle won't be as good. that's not to say that tn panels are bad though! i'm sure i can pretty say that there won't be any ghosting. if you're only ever going to sitting in front of the monitor and don't need the better colour accuracy then its ok to go for tn panels.
how flexible is your budget?
Re: need help want to get a new monitor
well tbh 150-200 quid nd id prefer to buy from amazon as have vouchers for there
Re: need help want to get a new monitor
right, took a look and can't really say if i can tell you which is best for definite at that price range with what amazon have to offer.
found some conflicting reviews on all monitor which is usual. the acer x222w has been mentioned as a screen with the glossy type of panel by some people, so the colours look 'richer' but there's the problem of reflection. overall it seems average in pretty much everything, thats not to say its a bad monitor though.
there's two that look ok as well, the lg l226wtg and the samsung sm2232bw. the lg has a 2ms response time and had the problems associated with overdrive, but thats been fixed now from what i've heard. it's also meant to have a better for colour accuracy as it uses FRC to display '16.7m' colours. alot of people have said in forums that this is the one to get for a 22" lcd. the samsung is regarded to have the best panels on paper, but not sure if you've heard the big scandal that their panel lottery caused? apparently they have done this with this particular model, but who really knows. the only other downside is that the stand is both difficult to assemble (stand to monitor) and its not very stable.
if you're able to buy from another site then i would definitely advise you to get this

MISCO SAVER 24 WUXGA TFT - Misco.co.uk
they're both the same monitor, but aria is out of stock atm. they do have it quite often in their superspecial deals. for 200 quid i can't think of a better monitor tbh, but of course you won't be able to use your vouchers. i have told 3 people or more to get this one on the forum and alot of people agree with me on this including two of my friends have one!
Re: need help want to get a new monitor
I can vouch for the 206BW and the 226BW being amazing monitors, you should be able to pick one up for < 200.

I'd suggest you add the disclaimer: "so the colours won't be as accurate as a pva or ips panel once calibrated" - before calibration, it can be something of a lottery, though on average the PVA and S-IPS panels will probably edge out the TN film panels.
One of the biggest differentiators in flatscreens is how far out the colours are out of the box. It's a difference that you pay big money for - Eizos cost so much because they really don't need much work at all. That being said, you can buy a Huey for £35 on the bay, which helps with colour aware applications.

That is true, i thought that all tn panels are 6-bit instead of the 8-bit that pva and ips are. which means they can display more colours and therefore colours will pretty always be better after calibration. From my experience i can definitely notice the difference in terms of colour accuracy when comparing tn to pva panels, the colours don't looked as washed out on the pva panels.
eizos are brilliant monitors when colour accuracy is concerned, the build quality is apparently excellent. but the reason why eizos cost so much is that the high end models use ips panels which are regarded as the best overall panel type, not because of the fact that they don't need as much calibration out of the box.
lcd panels are only made by a few companies in the world, so there are alot of monitors sharing the same panel model. so why the difference in price? i guess its the cost of the stand/build quality and what extra tech they put in such as FRC and overdrive etc. but its true that monitors from different companies will require differing amounts of calibration even if they use the same panel.
edit: just found another thread of your's in the shopping section of the forum. i have both a tn and pva panel, the difference in viewing angles is remarkable. when i got my new monitor i went for the tn version, but because of loads of stuck/dead pixels i returned it and got the pva panel to see if it would be better. i was amazed at the difference in viewing angles, i can see the screen image wherever i go in my room! not sure if you current monitor is pva, but one way of know is to stand directly in front of it and look almost vertically down onto the screen. if you can still see the image and its not too much different in terms of quality then its a pva, otherwise tn. also not joking about the colours, blacks are definitely better and whites are almost pristine. but afaik there aren't any 22" pva panels available.
Re: need help want to get a new monitor
Actually, a number of Eizos are PVA panels.
e.g. EIZO / ColorEdge CG222W
That's the first 22" PVA panel I've seen. The only price I saw for it was a mere £939 inc. VAT - bargain!
I use a S-IPS panel (HP LP2065), which I'm delighted with (it actually costs more now than what I paid for it, thanks to a cashback), but I know it isn't necessarily the right panel for everyone. I don't game on it much, but Unreal Tournament looks great on it, and I've never noticed any ghosting. It isn't HDCP capable or widescreen, though, which rules it out for serious movie use, especially when used as a TV plugged into an upscaling PVR via HDMI.
The easiest place to compare monitors is a PC World store - just view the monitors from an acute angle, and watch those colours wash out and turn yellow - ugh! This is especially noticeable between the 20" iMac (TN) and the 24" (HS-IPS) iMac.
I agree with you on the 24" Yuraku - it's an outstanding deal.
