New Monitor

Now im contemplating getting a nice big full 1080p monitor but im not completely sure if should wait and see what OLED technology brings.

For those of you who do not know what OLED is, its organic light emmitting diode. Each pixel is made up of a single miniscule light emitting diode, similar to that which probably shows you your hard drive is active etc. This offers 4-5 x the contrast ratio of LCD displays, extremely thin panels (so much so u can roll them up) and very low power consumption. It probably is about a year and a half away from hitting us and even then i think it will be mainly on small screens with the start of IPTV (television to your mobile) and extremely expensive.

I dont particualy want to get a 1650 x 1050 20-22" montior as i dont feel it is enough of an upgrade from my 19" 1440 x 900. So do you people think its worth going for a 24-30" LCD panel?

I do game (and i know it will mean a new GFX card but that may come when the next gen ones peek their faces) but the main purpose of the monitor will be photoshop, flash, video-editing, 3d design etc.

They all look like good monitors, and you'll be paying a fair bit for an OLED until they become more mainstream which I imagine will take some time.

I'd personally go for the Samsung, not just for the specs but for it's plush looks.

I currently have the Samsung 226BW (S-Panel) and have been very pleased with it - in fact I usually upgrade more often but plan on keeping this long term as it's been so good. BTW, this is a 22" monitor and is a nice size (I've had 19,20,22,24 monitors) and I found the 24" required annoying head movement and the 20" too small, making the 22" a nice compromise :)

Cheers stox, i know i will probably be waiting a while for OLED but what i was thinking was, is it worth spending 300+ on a monitor which is going to be supersedes by something soooooo much better within a year or 2.

22" monitors are slightly appealing, especially with the lower price tag however i would really like a monitor capable of a full 1080 lines for HD goodness :D

I did have the hyundai that you posted, but returned it to get the pva version of it, apart from the panel it is exactly the same. I love the fact that the monitor has so many connections and that its really adjustable, but is it worth the 400 quid i spent i xmas? for me it does as i want all those connections, but if you don't need them then there is a really good and cheap option. you've probably heard of it by now, the ocuk/yuraku 24" pva panel.

i've done a bit of video editing before, and you do appreciate the amount of space you get with a 24". the good thing about this panel is that it is pva, meaning that it'll be better than the samsung and hyundai that you posted (not sure if the lg is tn or pva). viewing angles and colours are generally better on pva panels. there's no ghosting and its hdcp compliant (the ocuk version isn't btw), its an absolute steal! if i didn't need my connections on the monitor i'd have gone the yuraku in a heartbeat.

it is a nice monitor! i thing i think you might find useful is that you can rotate the screen to a portrait view, if you've got portrait photos to edit then you can see the whole image at one time. if you can afford it then i would go for the pva version. colours are much better imo than the tn. i wouldn't have known unless i returned the tn version and got the pva as a replacement.
