Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
may as well wait and see what happens with the next generation cards first... new cards from both camps are coming out in the next month
edit: w00t, I beat mike
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
I wouldn\'t bother tbh. The 7900 is still a great card and I can\'t think of many games that are DX10 only yet. There are also new cards coming out next month so I wouldn\'t bother with getting one now unless you are desperate.
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
Thx guys, though so. And probably when new cards arrive, oldish will come down in price
What news is coming from nVidia? some 9900?
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
yup 9900gtx from nvidia and 4870 from ATI

If your "my system" tag is up to date, then an upgrade to dual core would probably be of greater value to you these days. Check your motherboard compatibility, but it should be fairly cheap too :)
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
I forgot to update it :P, i have amd dual for some time.
Anyway, we will see what future bring
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
Or just get two 7900 in SLI killer combination.
but i agree with the rest save your money till the newer cards come out
1.lower price on other card's
2.may sway your mind to save up that big extra to get the best of what Nvidia has to offer.
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
Depending on whay you play, the 8800GT may be a huge step up from the 7800GTX. I went from an X1800XT, which is not far off a 7900GTX in performance, to an 8800GT 512MB. It was a marvellous improvement, allowing me to play pretty much everything I own on high details at my native resolution. Only been unable to max out two games at my 1900x1200 resolution, Crysis and Call of Juarez (DX10).
There is a much bigger performance leap going from 7800GTX to 8800GT than there is from 8800GT to 9800GTX. The latter two are based on the same G92 GPU and there's only a few percent performance difference between them. Still, we'll have a new round of cards turning up in the next few weeks and it may be worth seeing what they bring to the table, both in terms of performance and how they affect the prices of other cards.
There have been a few interesting articles regarding CPU vs GPU ugrades recently. Here's one: GPU vs. CPU Upgrade: Extensive Tests : Test Subjects: Four Generations of Nvidia Chips - Tom's Hardware .
Edit: I'd say steer clear of the 9800GTX entirely. It's basically an overclocked 8800GTS 512MB, which can usually be had for much cheaper.
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
I have just upgraded from an X1950XTX 512MB (which is slightly more powerful then an 7900GTX), and I would say that the 8800GT is almost twice as powerful. But wait for new gen cards to come out and see how they turn out.
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
Next gen cards should help push down prices of current cards, the 8800GT is a great card, and are already appearing for sub £100 which is pretty cheap.
It also depends on your games, and your system. Do you use Vista, if not then you can't really make any use of the DX10 capabilities of the card. Though the 8800GT will outperform your 7900GTX will it be that noticeable - imo not especially.
What resolution and what games do you tend to play?
HOWEVER... there is always the catch, if you can sell your 7900GTX for a nice sum (most likely on eBay) then you might be able to upgrade for very little money, some people still chase after SLI (don't go that route as I think its a waste of money especially when 1 card can do just as good a job - it doesn't tend to scale well this dual-card thing)
I found the 8800GT to be too powerful for me (though I did only have a 19inch widescreen at the time) but I enjoyed its single-slot-ness and it was pretty quiet if I am being honest! If you only have a 19inch screen it definitely isn't worth it, at 1440*900 the FPS you will see on most games will be very similar for both cards, and should be well above 60 :)

That depends somewhat, if you are someone like me, who likes to play with all the eye candy on, including shadows, soft shadows, aa, antiscopic, bloom, hdr, volumetric lights, water reflections, grass shadows, texture resolutions/quality, texture filtering, and anything else the game developers come up with, then you will see a difference at 1280*1024 :D but if you are content with turning a couple of those options off and lowering the settings then you wont see much difference.
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
Hi guys, did not look here for a while :). Well I have a buyer for my 7900GTX, he will give 60 pound strait away, so it would cost me 50 to upgrade. And I like 1st shooters like crysis and lately assassins creed which is really great game. I play lots of WoW aswell. Atm trying to make a deal on intels e4300 c2d - this cpus can be easily OCed to get great performance. Thanks again for tips
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
With an 8800GT I can max out Assassin's Creed at my native resolution (1920x1200). Crysis is a bit more challenging - I have to compromise between resolution and settings.
Re: 7900GTX vs 8800GT 512MB
For £50 I would certainly get that 8800GT.
It's amazing how cheap great quality kit is now, in my opinion.
