Monitor Questions and Advice
Looking to get a new monitor and need some advice. I will be playing games on it and general internet 'work', with the potential to watch HD movies on it. I would like a 19", don’t want it too big! And to spend around the £200 mark hopefully under that.
First question is at 19" and a resolution of 1440x900 is there any point in it being HDCP compliant as you would need 1080 for full HD or have I missed something?
Anyway I have a list of a few monitors and wondering if anyone has any experience with them or can pass on comments with potential advice on other models.

You really will appriciate the extra vertical resolution of a 20-22" screen (1680 x 1050) and your budget should get you a nice screen of this size. As for being physically big I'm sitting in front a 20" and 19" dual widescreen setup and there is very little difference between the two in terms of size :)
I'd take a picture for you but my camera has just gone flat.
But the difference between this page is the 19" just shows your post and the 20" shows the post and the quick reply box. Now I have posted the 20" shows both yours and my post and the 19" just shows yours still. It can get annoying.
I'd consider this, Dell Ultrasharp 2009WFP 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Midnight Grey I have the older 2007wfp and its still the best monitor I have used other than the 24" version.
The 19" screen I have is similar to this Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK and the LG you mentioned. It's a fantastic monitor for movies, takes a bit of setting up but its good. Web stuff it's not so great.

With the bigger resolution I'm worried I might suffer a bit as my graphics card is only a X1950 PRO. Do you think it will suffer in gaming mode as i'm running a 17" 1280x1024 at the moment.

Just to point out though staffsMike your 2007wfp & the new 2009wfp use different panels, the new one is only a TN (just wanted to point that out to the OP, nothing more) :)

You won't be able to achieve full hd 1080p unless you get a monitor with 1920x1080 or above. These are only really present in 24" monitors or above, such as one i've just purchased (for around £200! and not a TN panel). I'm not going to try suade you to buy a 24" because it seems like a very big jump from your preferences, but i'm only running on a measily 8600gts and I can play CoH and CSS in full graphics at this resolution, and also world in conflict without AA (AA is not really needed at this res).
Just make sure you don't get a tn panel!
More on topic with your 19", your 17" monitor with that resolution will practically have the same amount of pixels as your 19" widescreen. That said, the only difference you'll see is that your screen will go from being a square to being a widescreen rectangle. Now in my opinion, I wouldn't want to spend £200 on something with such minimal differences from your current setup. Perhaps I am trying to suade you to a bigger monitor, but only because it would benefit you more. If your only playing games such as CSS, etc, and not things like Age of Conan, you may aswell get a larger monitor and save for a new graphics card for when you want to play more intensive games.

1280 x 1024 to 1440 x 900 is actually a resolution downgrade... :confused:
If you don't want too big a screen I'd suggest a 20", since both 20" and 22" are usually 1650 x 1050.
In regards to graphics power, I moved from 1280 x 1024 to 1920 x 1200 and was rather suprised how well my X1950pro held out (still upgraded a few months after anyway...) although obviously it varied between games. Generally I'd advise you not take graphics power into account when buying a monitor, as it can always be improved later, and you may find the extra resolution good for plenty of things besides gaming.
Above all: if you buy a monitor, buy a good monitor, that way chances are you want want to/need to upgrade for a lot longer than other components.

I didn't know that, mines still better then :D It also comes with composite and s-video inputs which is handy for me :)

Well thanks for the info. I might add that I'm getting a new monitor because the old one is slowly dying on me, so its a replacement not an upgrade in essence.
I do play recent games on it, Gears of War, Bioshock etc so am interested in performance of my card, which I dont really want to upgrade just yet. I suppose I could play on lower resolution in games.
If I were to look at the 22-24" category has anyone got any suggestions? Just to add I don't want/need intgrated speakers.
Question for nFuriate. You say don't go for TN panel but I only intend to use it whilst sitting in front of it, not angled viewing. From what I've read TN is OK for that as the refresh rates at greater?

Assuming it's still the PVA panel this one is very good

BUT, at 24" you are going to start to struggle to game at native resolution where at 1680 x 1050 I think your x1950 will do a pretty good job :)

I'm running a 22" Samsung 2232BW on a 1950Pro. I don't play any of the newer games but Far Cry, CoD2 and such run perfectly. I did try the Bioshock demo on it too and was pleasantly surprised.

very good advice! buy the best monitor you can, since a decent monitor can last for years before you even need to upgrade. unless it dies obviously....

tn panels are ok if you're only ever going to be sitting in front of it. but viewing angles isn't the only positive thing about pva pnaels. colour accuracy is something that pva panels are better at as well since they can display 16.7m colours compared to the 16.2m of tn panels. also with a bigger screen, colour shifting becomes much more noticeable even if you're sitting in front of the monitor. how much and whether you could accept the difference is a matter of opinion.

As other guys here suggest for a mere 220 quid you can get good quality 24" PVA monitor. I myself own the DGM 24" which I got for 190 incl. off ebay and am very happy with purchase :)
Yuraku looks like better option with HDCP support.
BTW playing HL2 fakefactory's cinematic pack ver.7 on 1920x1080 with max in-game settings plus 4AA/16AF and game runs flawlessly. I have HD3870 though.
