Best next size up from 19" monitor?

A few months later than planned, I now want to order a larger monitor than my current, trusty old Hyundai L90D+ 19" LCD monitor. I want something that makes an appreciable difference in viewing area from a 19" monitor, yet isn't too expensive. I suppose my budget would be around £500 max. I have an 8800GT graphics card if that matters.

So what is the best sized monitor in terms of viewable area and under £500 that I should go for?

Defo a 24" w/s monitor, especially with that budget

24" would be my suggestion too.

Either that, or a very good 20" if you aren't worried about screen real estate, but more quality of colours/viewing angles.

I made the move from 19" to 24" a while ago, 20" and 22" didn't seem like enough of a jump - both in resolution and viewing area. Also there are models with plenty of connector types if you want to use it for everything. You have plenty to choose from with that budget too.

In regard to graphics, I have a 3870 and it's coped alright with everything so far at 1980x1200

Re: Best next size up from 19" monitor?

"24 Yuraku is making the rounds as a brilliant monitor THIS it has the same panel as in the £600 benq displays (and i also read that it is the same panel that is used in some eizos) but a £600 panel for £210 isn't to be sniffed at. the only thing i will say is that some people complain about the quality of the plastic casing surrounding the panel and also the blue LED is said to be very bright. i will be able to comment more on both of those tomorrow because mine is supposed to be turning up. so if you are interested i could take some piccys of it

but at £210 you could get one and get a better graphics card to go with it if you wanted to , or you could get 2 and still have change

Re: Best next size up from 19" monitor?

I'd say £500 is around the top end of 24" or the middle-ish 26".

I'd go for a 26" if I were you, you'd definitely notice the difference between 24" and 26".

    Have a look a Overclocker's (unfortunately scan don't have any) 26" monitors: Sound & Vision » Monitors » 26" LCD - Overclockers UK

What're you looking for in the monitor? Just size? Or viewing angle? Response time? TV tuner? Speakers?

I had a 20" for a while, but the jump up to 24" was brilliant. So I would recomend a 24"

Any opinions on this 26" monitor at £505?

Samsung SM-T260HD 26" Widescreen LCD Monitor with Freeview/Digital TV Tuner - Rose Red

It has a DVB tuner built into it too. That could solve another problem for my computer desk in my study as I currently have a 7" LCD TV on the desk which I could get rid of.

    Interesting. A TV/Monitor hybrid.

Not seen one of those before.

I was looking at that one - but too expensive for me!

You can't go wrong with Samsung.

It is only a TN panel with bad viewing angles, which I would have thought would look even worse on a large screen of 26"s.

Personally I would look for a decent 24" and buy a TV card for your pc, all still within budget

Broadly true, but if I remember correctly, PC Pro recently reviewed the Dell 2408 and concluded that it was at least as good as the Samsung 245T and about £200 cheaper. Is that "going wrong"?

It's certainly worth remembering that many manufacturers do budget, mid-range and high-end products, and because the high-end product gets rave reviews doesn't necessarily mean the budget ones are as good. In fact, it's odds-on certainty that they aren't. BMW's M5 may have one hell of a hot performance, but it doesn't mean a 118 does.

Dell 2408 is what I'm going to get. It's even sweeter at the US price ($600).

22inch TN Screen. I went from my 19 inch and I love the change though it can hurt my eyes a little and it makes me laugh a bit when I maximise a web page.

Re: Best next size up from 19" monitor?

At home I had an old iiyama 19" which did me proud for about 6 years. I now have a 24" widescreen HyundaiIT and it is amazing. So bright and clear.

At work I had 3 cheap Hansol 19"s and went to two 22" iiyama and a cheap 24" Acer in the middle, all widescreen. Very nice!

24" is a good size and on that budget you can get a very good one that should last a long time. Else you would be looking at the lower end 26"ers - but they would still be brilliant compared to most CRTs.

Re: Best next size up from 19" monitor?

yep another vote for 24". i've also got a hyundai 24" widescreen (W240-PVA). you pretty much have all the 24" monitors on the market covered by 500 quid. depends whether you want to spend all of it....

the yuraku mentioned above is awesome for the price, but does lack connectivity and a adjustable stand. the dell 2408 is probably the one with the most number of connections, and the image quality is meant to be very good. imo opinion its better than the samsung 245t as the dell has 1:1 pixel mapping and also a displayport.

the hyundai that i've got, has all the connections i wanted and also 1:1 pixel mapping. i can say that there's definitely no ghosting when i play games or movies, so i wouldn't have no hesistation in recommending it
