Specifications i need it to fit:

    22-24"
    HDMI connection
    HD resolutions up to 1080p
    DVI+VGA
Will be used with an Xbox360 and the occasional game through my laptop - mainly racing and FPS games

    Re: Recommend me a monitor

only 24" monitors and up can display full 1080p. there's quite a few out, but the ones with all the connections you need are a bit harder to find at that price range

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

here's two that i've found from scan that meets all your requirements. the reason why they're some of the cheapest on offer is because they are TN panels as oppose to PVA/MVA and IPS panels which are better.

I've got the PVA version of the hyundai and would recommend that if you want all the inputs you've stated. it does 11:1 pixel mapping and the stand is really adjustable.

if you don't need all the inputs and would like to save money then i suggest this

    MISCO SAVER 24 WUXGA TFT - Misco.co.uk

it doesn't have a hdmi port but it is hdcp ready so you cann still connect your xbox to it. the main selling point of this monitor is that it uses a PVA panel and at this price iits a really good deal.

if you want a PVA panel with all the inputs you've asked for then i'm afraid you're going to be looking at the best part of 400 quid

    Re: Recommend me a monitor

Thanks for the input, what are the differances between TN/PVA/MVA/IPS panels?

what does each of them offer?

all i know about them at the moment is that TN has worse viewing angles (which dont bother me at all) but im unsure on all the other advantages/disadvantages

    Re: Recommend me a monitor

PVA/MVA are pretty similar the main advantage for them is their viewing angles and the ability to display 'true' 16.7M colours (TN panels can only display 16.2M without any special hardware/software), but downside is that they're slower than Tn panels.

IPS are the most expensive, if you need the best colour accuracy then this is it for you.... not many people do go for IPS because they're so expensive.

TN panel as you've pointed out have poor viewing angles, but also because of the amount of colours they can display they aren't as accurate in displaying colour. what i mean by this is that the colour looks 'washed out' compared to the other panels. but they do have the faster response times, which is why hardcore gamers favour TN panels.

If you were going to rank them in terms of everything then TN panels are probably at the bottom of the pile with IPS at the top, and PVAs being the compromise

    Re: Recommend me a monitor

some very usefull information there, thank you

Well from the looks of things TN panel would probably be the best for me, while i would probably like a PVA panel for the better colours thats the only thing i can see that would push me towards a more expensive screen, and i dont think its quite enough to push me that far lol

    Cheers

    Re: Recommend me a monitor

no worries. with PVA prices higher than TN panels, i thought i'd throw in the cheap PVA panel above. its definitely worth a shot if you watch movies but aren't sitting in front of the screen. but like i said before it doesn't have a hdmi connector.... as long as you're happy getting a TN panel and definitely need the extra inputs then i'd definitely recommend the hyundai. did have that exact same one, but decided to return it to get the pva version....

like i said though the more expensive ones are around 400 quid and thats where you get alot more choice. the dell 2408 came out not too long ago, if i was buying nw rather than last yr i'd pbe pretty hard push to choose between these two. the dell is a tiny bit more expensive but it has a really good zero dead pixel policy.....

that monitor you mentioned is pretty much exact the same as the one i mentioned. its made by DGM, whereas the one i posted is by yuraku. the one advantage the yuraku has over the ocuk one is that it is hdcp

Would the Dell 2408 be any good for gaming and PS3 use, i've heard of poor response times but are they that noticable?

Cheers, considering the price of that one im fairly tempted to just say sod and buy it (much to the dislike of the missus, but what she doesnt know wont hurt her)

While silly to like or dislike a particular brand i really cant stand dell, i know there monitors get quite good ratings with people on computer forums but i always hated there computers (for obvious reasons) and ever since using there servers ive had a BIG dislike for them as a whole

Now....to PVA or not to PVA that is the question

    Re: Recommend me a monitor

ikix: it should be pretty good. i think the main issue is not the response but something called input lag. basically when you move the mouse the movement on the screen doesnt match up.... apparently its something that some users may notice and others may, just like ghosting. if you search for users opinions on it, then you'll see ppl who say its a problem and others saying its not. its basically down to you.

for me on my monitor i can see a tiny bit of ghosting/inverse ghosting (not too sure which one it is...) when browsing say a forum where the background is the same colour. but games you can't notice (well i can't any)

mrbios: i'm definitely pleased i got the pva version, the viewing angle was the thing that made me go for it in the end. its quite amazing, i can stand and look vertically down on the monitor and can still see it.... if the missus says anything then plonk her on a chair in front of it and play a hd movie for her.... my missus was impressed that she could still watch the movie.... one last thing, a monitor is probably the most imp. part of the computer. you stare at it day in day out and it'll last you the longest out of all the components

    Re: Recommend me a monitor

i spend too much time concerntrating on what im doing in a game to notice what the monitors doing tbh, so the minimal amount of ghosting shouldnt be a problem

at the moment im using a hyundai L90D+ at home, im not sure what thats like in terms of input lag/ghosting as ive never looked for it but im sure anything i buy these days cant be worse than that can it?

Completely agree - with hardware so cheap and devaluing so fast, the best investment you can make is in your input and output devices, of which the monitor is the most expensive unit. About the only other thing that can make as appreciable an improvement to your computing is...a good chair!
