about to buy a graphics card
As the title says I'm about to buy a gfx card, I want a card that will be able to play crysis and last for a few years.
My screen is a 1680x1050 pixel
cpu-e4400 wich I'll be overclocking to 2.5-3ghz (I know it can reach those clocks easilt)
ram -2gb
mboard asus 650i sli nforce 6
I was thinking about etting an 8800 gts 512mb soon as they come back in stock. Is there any other cards that offer better value for money given my system?
Re: about to buy a graphics card
Thats a very decent card especially for that resolution. There might be a price drop quite soon though due to the pending release of the new ATi and Nvidia cards.
Re: about to buy a graphics card
any idea when that will be, I was going to buy in the next week or 2
Re: about to buy a graphics card
Well they are coming out in a couple of weeks. The ATi card may even fit your budget :)
Re: about to buy a graphics card
any info on this new ati card?

Re: about to buy a graphics card
I'd recommend waiting for new cards as well. Early rumors report that 4850 has similar or even higher performance than 9800GTX and few stores already sell it on pre-order for 160-180 Euro.
Re: about to buy a graphics card
They're being launched in the next couple of weeks, it could be two or three months before they're widely availible

I think the 8800GTS 512mb is a very good choice. The new 4850 looks like it's only a bit quicker than the 8800GT at most, and might debut at a higher price. The other card to look for in the near future is the 9800GT.
Re: about to buy a graphics card
All current gfx cards will let you down. They will not play Crysis properly at 1680x1050 and that means that the card will almost certainly not last you 3 years!
You need to wait for the new generation of cards. The GT280 sounds like what your after, its going to be damn pricey though.
Re: about to buy a graphics card
Crysis wont play properly with all high settings in 4 years, nevermind now. Crysis is a tech showpiece, nothing more.

I'm sure in 4 years hardware will of tamed the beast in crysis, remember Farcry?
Re: about to buy a graphics card
Reports are saying that the GT280 can run Crysis with everything on high at 1920x1200 16xAA, without any problems.
Benching about twice as fast as a 9800GX2.
I guess we will soon find out how true those numbers are.

Yes, and it was the same thing. Monitors grew in resolution which negated GPU performance advances because they had to render extra pixels. Even today's average PC can only handle ~60fps in Farcry. Granted, the average PC is lucky to have a mid-range GPU, but the point still stands.
Re: about to buy a graphics card
It seems to me that the 8800 gts 512s are now a no go with scan as the only one left sells for more than a 9800gtx, I guess they won't be ordering anymore in with the new releases so near, overclockers.co.uk also has low stocks of the 8800
I guess I now have no choice but to wait
Re: about to buy a graphics card
Well its easier having your decision made for you, lets hope its the best option for you :D
