Can't get 1920x1200 resolution back again

I've been using an Acer 24" monitor on my Dell laptop for a month now, and all has been going great. I get 1920x1200 resolution. But all of a sudden the monitor went to a lower resolution and I can't get it back to 1920. Anyone know how to force the settings property to show that? Is there another problem such as the driver went wacky? thanks

I'm using a KVM switch and sometimes the graphics card fails to recognise the monitor. I usually leave it a few minutes then change the resolution using the graphics card settings (in my case Catalyst control centre) to a low one, then back up to the required resolution.

If you bring up the display properties dialog (right click on the desktop and click properties), and then goto the settings tab, you can click on advanced, under the color quality, and goto the monitor tab, there is a check box saying hide modes that this monitor cannot display. Un-check this, click OK, and you should be able to choose any resolution you like. Be careful not to pick one which your monitor cannot display - would not want to do any damage to it

Dear Will: I'll try that tonight when I get home. Oddly enough, there is a huge thread in an Apple discussion group on this same subject. They have two answers. One is unplugging the monitor and plugging it in during sleep mode. The other is to power up, close the lid immediately, and the laptop will recognize the large monitor as it's main monitor. I like your idea, I'll try it.

I came across the same issue before on a different system a while ago and found what Will said worked for me too.

Re: Can't get 1920x1200 resolution back again

The "resolution" to this was powering up the laptop and then closing the lid quickly. The laptop then thinks the external monitor is the default monitor and it kicks into place. The "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" box was grayed out and could not be checked. Probably because it's the default monitor. Thank you for your suggestion tho.

What version of windows do you have, in Windows 7 its called Screen Resolution

If you have a Nvidia card you can also find it be right clicking on the desktop and going to the Nvidia Control Panel.

    Not sure about ATI though

Re: Can't get 1920x1200 resolution back again

Does it connect through VGA or DVI? I was having a similar problem with a VGA (D-Sub) cable from thatcable, and the replacement had the same problem. Turns out they were just crap cables they sell as a Fisual Pearl one from Amazon works fine, I think the data pin wasn't connected properly (even though it passed a continuity check on a multimeter, strangely) as the monitor make/model wasn't displayed either.

Don't rule it out just yet, besides Belkin don't make the best VGA cables...

I went through 3 different cables with the same problem, but the original one and the Fisual one I have now both work fine in that regard.

I dont know how a cable can make that big of a difference, Maybe a need a new video card or something, is this an easy fix problem ??

I had the same problem and it was the belkin cable. It didnt have the plug that sent teh EDID data through to the pc so windows thought it wa a plug and play monitor ad would only allow a few resolutions. The way I did it was to tell windows not to use the EDID information (untick a box on the ati catalyst control panel under displays) and then set the res I wantedas well as change the belkin cable back to the stock one.

Re: Can't get 1920x1200 resolution back again

VGA in general is not really good enough for resolutions that high anyway, if your monitor can take a digital input such as DVI or HDMI i would suggest you try them instead, its likely you will have much better results.
