    Any crossfire owners?

I have a X1950XTX, which I've been very pleased with - but want to upgrade now that DX10 and Physx are likely to affect my gaming in the next 2-3 years (ie before I buy another card).

I'm not swayed in either ATi or nVidias' direction - I buy what I think suits my purpose, regardless of maker. Unfortunately, alot of people on forums belong to one camp or the other, and it's hard to get impartial opinions.

I had my mind set on getting a GTX 260 - but now the HD4850 is doing well and the 4870 is likely to do even better. I'm not in any rush, so I'll be waiting for the review and comparisons next week at least, before deciding which way to go.

Comparing the prices, as I was prepared to shell out £300 plus for the 260, I could instead go for a crossfire set-up of 4850s or 4870s for around the same price.

So, amidst the many posts and articles one reads about multi-card issues with gaming etc, I'd like to hear from any crossfire-toting gamers about how bad these problems really are.

Also, if a game dives/crashes whilst using crossfire, how easy is it to switch to a single card just for that game?

    My current rig:

    E6850 @ 3.66GHz
    P5K-E WiFi AP
    4GB OCZ Reaper HPC @ 1014MHz
    X-Fi etc.
Monitors: HannsG HW223D @ 1680x1050 and an Acer AL1916W @ 1440x900 - both connected to the X1950XTX at stock speed.

I may also upgrade from Vista HP32 to HP64.

    Any useful advice/info appreciated

3870x2 performs slightly "worse" than the 4850, although i highly reccomend waiting for the 4870, as you say

    Re: Any crossfire owners?

Just wait for the 4870 results as the 4850 are very promising. The problem with crossfire (and sli) is that multi scaling sometimes works worse than single chip setups.

A (possibly) good buy , when it arrives could be the 4870 x2. again await prices and benchies

Why do you want to go cista 64?? the only advantage it will give you is more memory access but it has poorer driver support than vista 32. just dont do it.

    Re: Any crossfire owners?

Latest driver set from Creative for the Audigy fully supports Vista 64 bit - just transferred my card from the old XP machine.
The main advantage of 64 bit is total accessible memory - remember the memory includes that on the graphics card so 2 x 512MB graphics card knocks 1GB off the total.

    Re: Any crossfire owners?

    Yeah - I meant 4850/4870 Crossfire - had a bad morning!

Anyway - the memory access is exactly the reason why I am contemplating 64 bit. I have 4 x 1GB of top performance RAM - and it's a shame to lose even more than the 512MB that I lose with my current card when I upgrade to the 260 or 4000s. Of course, that's from the measly 3.12GB that 32 bit Windows lets me use anyway.

    Thanx for the replies.

So does anyone know if its possible to enable/disable Crossfire on the fly?

    Re: Any crossfire owners?

    .....cont'd

I checked today and there are 64bit drivers available for all of my hardware.

I have a second rig with Vista 32 in it, anyway, so any troublesome items can go on that.

Looks like it's a 'no' with the crossfire switching, then - but if the 4870 does as well as the 260, then I'll just get one and be happy.

I'll just have to buy my Race Driver: Grid separately!

    Re: Any crossfire owners?

Considering that you can get a 4850 for £130, while a 260 would set you back at least £270, I think that it would make sense to go for a 4850, as it is almost as good as the 260, or wait for the 4870's to come out - which I would expect to be as good as the 260's but cheaper.

Until yesterday I was much in favor of Nidiva graphics, but then when I saw a 4850 for only £130, I thought that bang-for-buck was much better on the ATI cards,

    Re: Any crossfire owners?

I would have thought that a single 4850 would preform best on preformance/price

Thats what I am going for in my new build after having been a severe Nidiva lover
