    GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

    @Anandtech.
Given how bland it is, I am surprised that the NDA for this card was lifted so soon. The 4850 has little to fear, especially at the proposed price point.

Yeh, the only thing it seems to be positive over the 4850 is its heat output. Nvidia are going to have to drop prices if they don't want to lose the mainstream market in my opinion.

    Re: GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

nvidia are to busy coming up with names for all there slightly different cards which means they have little time for actual development compared to ati which actually did well with just the 3870/3850/3870x2, perfect.

This card seems to perform pretty bad given the fact they have gone from 8800GTX---> 8800GTS(g92)----> 9800GTX and now the 9800GTX+ but it still similarly performs to the very old 8800GTX, why? because nv idia have been damn lazy and now they have lost the crown for a bit .

Well hopefully with the new ranges coming out they will be forced to drop some prices, especially with ATI's offerings this week...

    Re: GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

The only difference between the 9800GTX and GTX+ is 65nm vs 55nm, so the + can oc better. Therefore I am not sure it is worth $230 when you can get a 4850 which is also 55nm for $200. Nvidia will have to drop prices to compete that this level in the market.

Not too sure why people keep mentioning the heat!
My 8800GT 512MB gets very hot during heavy gaming (90 degrees) but that has done this since release day and never has had an issue - it's also on the revision 1 cooler!!!

yup, funny how reviews never say how high the fan speed is on the cards as there could well be the issue of the 29% fan speed on the new 4850/70 and also the gtx200 series as was the 8800GTS/9800GTX/8800GT etc. My 8800GTS g92 is on around 60% and hits 72C now, need to shoot it with some canned air though as i believe dust is building up in it.

    Re: GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

Dust build-up is inevitable on these enclosed HSF designs. I'm cleaning mine tonight too.

I use Rivatuner to control fan speeds, but I find sometimes it needs a "kick start" - force it up a notch once, then it continues to run. Probably related to it not loading properly at boot on Vista64.

    Re: GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

If there is a direct/close correlation between power consumption and heat though, the 4850 should be similar to the GTX280 and the 4870 well hotter. Looking from a 'my room gets really hot even when I have my windows and door open during the summer' perspective, I would've preferred if the 4000 series were a little more power efficient on idle.

    Re: GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

I think it will with drivers/bios updates - the idle clock speed is a bit higher than expected.

    Re: GeForce 9800 GTX+ Preview

If I can make the 4870 competitive with the GTX 280 in that aspect, it would be very satisfying. Still, there is a big gap to bridge, I wonder if lowering the clock would have enough impact.
