    General graphics card upgrade question

Ok, I've just done my first upgrade and things have been pretty inconsistent.

Should I have uninstalled the drivers from the previous card before installing the ones for the new card? Thanks.

........off to make some more mess.
    Every little helps!

Re: General graphics card upgrade question

    Depends.

If it's the same brand of Card - E.g. Nvidia -> Nvidia or ATi -> ATi then mostly they use the same drivers so your fine.

If different makes of cards then mostly it's better to uninstall drivers to prevent problems later down the line.

You can still uninstall the old drivers now if you wish.

Re: General graphics card upgrade question

as a general rule i always take off older drivers first regardless of its the same kind of card, more for my own piece of mind than anything else... new hardware = new software... just makes sense to me

Re: General graphics card upgrade question

Uninstalled/installed drivers and found the problem elsewhere: The 8800GT came with a 700/1715/940 setup, after installing the Nvidia HUD, I did my first clock-tinker and set it to 600/1500/900 and that sorted the inconsistency/instability problems.

I still think I'll stick to uninstalling the drivers in future. Thanks for the replies.

    What's a "driver cleaner?"

Similar to a registry cleaner, makes sure all traces of the software are removed from your windows installation
