AMD Radeon HD 4870 X2 ready by August

    http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20080702PD213.html

    $499

What's that coming over the hill? 2GB of DDR5 - yikes!

I may well be tempted (for the first time) to try dual gpu by this 'ere card.
I guess nVidia aren't going to be charging $1000 for the GTX280X2 then..

Interesting they're sticking 1gb per board on this card.. that's going to be costing them a fair bit, but totally the right decision as this card will be tested at mega-resolutions and they don't want to be framebuffer limited.

finally they decided to put 1gb on it, that is the main bottleneck i think because the ram speeds are high but the buffer size and amount is low, bet this will be the new king including performance +pric.e

Well well....look at what AMD/ATi have started to achieve.

That sounds truly awesome and a snip at $499, i believe that undercuts the 280GTX or priced aggressively in the same zone...

nVidia has been sucking for quite some time now, everyone's just been so wrapped up in 'ZOMG MEGAHURTZ' and 'ZOMG IT CAN RUN CRYSIS FULL DETAILZ!!' that they've lost prospective, thanks to a combination of nVidia's ever growing GPU prices, AMD pushing out a card that can run all current games without breaking a sweat, and the ever collapsing global economy they're taking AMD GPUs seriously. The only reason I bought an nVidia card last year was AMD's Linux drivers simply didn't work, now they do in closed and open flavours.

But this is good news, depending on how the price turns out here, I may end up buying one of these beasties.

any idea's on what a minimum recommended PSU would be for this card? Building a new system right now and I like the idea of being able to slot one of these in in a couple of months time

600W will be enough to be safe... but a good quality 520/550W will probably cope ok...

That's good... going with a 650W Dark Power at the moment, so that should do the job

I have been less than impressed with what I have seen around the latest nVidia offerings, certainly nothing to tempt me away from my trusty 8800GTX ! The 4870, however, looks interesting to a point, but would need Crossfire~ing to realise true potential.....

    Howdy Dmuz...

Still building up my PC, final bits get here tomorrow and the big build day is Friday

I'll let you know my thoughts once I'm up and running. Most reviews I've seen rate it as being very quiet though, one describes it as having 'insanely quiet operation'

    We shall see

    cheers
