hey, i'm planing to do my 1st build and i was wondering which would be best, the radeon 4850 in crossfire or the 4870.
i'm going to be playing at a resolution of 1280 by 1024
i'm planing to inclued....
Prosscor-Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600
MotherBoard-Asus MoBo P5K PRO LGA775
Memory-2/4gb corsair

all running on windows xp as i dont like vista
please leave your thoughts
Re: radeon 4850 crossfire or 4870?
I guess it depends on the resolution you want to play at and the level of detail you expect.
The HD4850 is plenty enough for 1920 x 1200 for example but the HD4870 with have a longer life at high detail with the same resolution :)
Re: radeon 4850 crossfire or 4870?
thanks....any ideas on the other components?
Re: radeon 4850 crossfire or 4870?
Looks good to me, if you are running a single graphics card just go for a decent 500W PSU such as the corsair HX 520W or the enermax Modu82+ 525W they will serve you very well :)
for the motherboard the P35 chipset is getting on a bit now, probably best to go for P45 with a board such as the Asus P5Q. I'd wait for the abit boards though they should be with us shortly.
Q6600 is agreat chip, if you want to overclock and run quietly get yourself a decent HSF like the http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=700899 or the scythe mine/ninja (both found here http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-8-215-0).

Re: radeon 4850 crossfire or 4870?
Well at 1280 by 1024 even a single 4850 is going to be overkill, so I'd go for that, it will still be able to cope at 1600x1200 or 1680x1024 (20-22" LCD monitor)
PSU as mike said, although actually a decent 400-450w should be fine, however with a decent 500w that would open you up for crossfire at a later point (although no point in crossfire with your current resolution)
Re: radeon 4850 crossfire or 4870?
Ageed with mike and pob, get yourself a single 4850 and Corsair HX 520W or VX 550W. See how it performs with the single 4850, and if you so desire upgrade to crossfire later on. It's also worth noting that you can runa 4870 and 4850 together in crossfire as far as I'm aware.
Re: radeon 4850 crossfire or 4870?
get a 4870 if you want to furture prove your system, the 4850 ok, but i found from my mates pc it doesnt handle too good on high/very high settings(NOT HIGH RES).
4850 good for high res but not high /very high gaming graphics.
4870 is simular to 4850 on res wise but much better for graphic settings i found, also later on in life crossfire them and you WILL rape
