8800 Ultra in SLi and Tri-SLi
Hehehe I know SLi is not really much cop but...
There are a few people selling these for like, well, ALOT less than a 9800GTX (even the new revised price of less than £125). (Of course these are used 8800 Ultras btw...)
It's tempting just to have it for rather than performance gains but more of "I got SLI 8800 Ultra" exercise.
I'd like to have Tri SLi just for the sake of it but a) motherboard doesn't support it and b) I don't have a power station to run it all!
Anyhow, just wondered what your thoughts are on going down a (albeit cheap) SLi route?
I fear power will be a major stumbling block and heat will be a massive issue.
Re: 8800 Ultra in SLi and Tri-SLi
Really not worth it.
1KW PSU, decent SLI board and another 2 8800s is going to be around £300-350.....
Might as well sell your 8800 once the 4870x2 (or its nVidia counterpart) are released.
Re: 8800 Ultra in SLi and Tri-SLi
Keep the 8800 Ultra, it will do for most games for another year or 2... don't bother with SLi as shaithis says its a waste
Re: 8800 Ultra in SLi and Tri-SLi
Hehe...not really interested in performance gains for going SLi but for the exercise of having SLi :) That is, if I can do it on the cheap.
Though you guys are probably right, it is a waste.
Right now I am working on 2nd or 3rd gen components...the latest stuff, I can't afford.
Still, I'm the type of guy who just wants it for the sake of it. (Also known as a fool.)
Re: 8800 Ultra in SLi and Tri-SLi
My buddy Bishop who co-runs GuildCom with me has two 8800 Ultras in SLI mode and says Crysis runs fairly well on Very High at a lower resolution (up until just a couple of days ago he was still using a CRT and could get away with using lower resolutions without the picture looking like crap, unlike my LCD... >.<).
I don't have any benchmarks to toss you, though. ^_^
Re: 8800 Ultra in SLi and Tri-SLi
Really thinking about this...I need another PSU to run two of these 8800 Ultras...maybe not such a smart idea. I got PSUs coming out of my ears right now! lol
[EDIT]
OK, the cheap 8800 Ultra I was eyeing on has suddenly had a massive price hike. Oh well. Maybe next build I'll try a "cheap" Quadfire setup. :D
