Another HD4870 thread..........
........Sorry!!! But I need to know before ordering.
I plan to get a HD4870 tomorrow and what i need to know is, will my PSU be upto the task? If not, please recommend a new one for me. My current PSU is a Hiper 580w Type-R, here's a link to the specs My PSU
The problem is that I don't understand power ratings on PSU's (such as 12v rail etc), it's baffled me for a long time. So I thought I'd ask people in the know.
Many thanks.
Re: Another HD4870 thread..........
Yes, though not a quality unit, it has enough power for the 4870.

Do you think I could run into problems? I don't want to get it and find that I'm gonna need a new PSU
Re: Another HD4870 thread..........
it will run it......... but the hipers are well avoided by many as they have been known to take out whole systems... (on numerous occasions)

I haven't had a problem so far but you have got me worried now, therefore, can anyone recommend a quality PSU? Around £50

It's no more likely to be a problem with the 4870 than it is with your current setup, so if you've had reliable service for a while and the airflow in your case is fine you shouldn't have a problem.
Re: Another HD4870 thread..........
I've not actually heard of them taking out whole systems, in that respect I think they are actually OK. They do seem to have a tendancy to die quite early though.
If you do want a new one then a a 520W corsair HX (around £65) would be good, modular, efficent, silent etc.. built by seasonic so very good and if you buy it from scan, 5 year warranty straight to them :)
£55 will get you a 550W VX by corsair, non-modular cables but otherwise very good :)
Re: Another HD4870 thread..........
Im thinking about getting the 550W VX, seems like a very good price. I would prefer to have a modular PSU, but i suppose it'll keep the price down :P

£60 will get you the TX650W...do you think it is not worth the extra fiver?
Re: Another HD4870 thread..........
It seems good are there any other differences other than output? Having got the 450W VX I feel a bit more comfortable recommending it but I'm sure the TX is great though :)
Looking at his system now.. I think he bought the VX now lol
Re: Another HD4870 thread..........
TX650W is made by seasonic, and is pretty much the same as a VX450W in quality, but just rated higher...
IMHO the VX550W is a terrible buy at £55 considering the TX650W is only a few pennies more...
Re: Another HD4870 thread..........
I'm tempted to agree that the VX isn't great value for money.. but only because the HX is £10 more :p
The TX does seem to make more sense given the price difference but the VX can often be found for £50..
I wouldn't buy either with my own money though.

If you can afford a bit more the Corsair TX 650W is a cracking PSU for around £60.
