    256mb ddr3 or 1gb ddr2?

Hey guys, im on the prowl for vid cards, ive seen many variations, some with 256mb but ddr3, others with 1gb ddr2, which one is better? the other thing is that the 1gb ddr2 ones are more expensive than the 256mb ddr3 ones, why?

    256MB of GDDR3 is a LOT better than 1gb of DDR2.

The 1gb is more just because it's got a bigger number on the front of the box.

    Re: 256mb ddr3 or 1gb ddr2?

    As Kalniel said
gddr3 is faster with more bandwidth so is generally better.

The amount of memory on the card does generally help it
Textures will be loaded onto the card memory to reduce the number of call the card needs to make on the system hard drive and memory, that's just one factor/use.
So sometimes more slower memory can be better than less faster, but generally it's a marketing thing.
However it all depends on other factors as well, screen size, gpu, what it's used for.
To display a basic desktop @ 32bit colour 1600x1200pixels requires roughly 58mb I seem to remember. (Gameing requires more)

Definitely the 256mb GDDR3 version 1gb of DDR2 is a sales gimmick to lull people into thinking they are getting something good

Unless it's an 8800gt being run on a 24" montior, when the correct answer is neather

rule of thumb if it's 19" montior or smaller, resolution equal too or below 1280x1024standard or 1440x900widescreen then you don't really need more than 256mb, extra is nice but not required.

Good, since my budget does not allow more, ill go with the 8600gt ddr3 512, i think it should be fairly okay on 1024x768 resolution, even my old 7600gt ran crysis on medium / high, fairly playable..i hope i wont regret it lol.

lol, actually im not from the UK, so my budget is according to my own currency, in Pakistan, im planning to put together a new PC next year, so I just want to get a cheap but fair solution for the graphics, since i blew my 7600gt a few days back...I just want a card to hold this PC together and play games till I get a new one, then this one is just going to be used in COD4 MP sessions and probably second life.

    oh sorry didn't realise.

the 8600gt will be alright for you as is certainly a slight upgrade from a 7600gt although i still think the 7600gt is a great card even by todays standards

O yes, 7600gt is one helluva card...as i said earlier, I played crysis on it medium/high with a fairly playable 25 - 30 fps average...tho with some overclocking (which was most probably the reason it blew, but it lasted 1 year 4 months )...it sure is an awesome card even by todays standards yes..savior of budget gamers, in its day.

I still have my old agp 7600gt setup in my dads PC and it plays all the source games with no issues on max settings @ 1280*1024

I think you'll find it performs around the same in actually games (esp dx10)
At 1024x768 the 7600gt is not really struggling and while the 8600gt is slightly faster/better dx10 will add more pritty ness which is going to effectively slow it down to the same speeds (with vista & a dx10 game of course)

shame you could find something better, but it's not easy in india, had a friend who used to buy stuff here in the uk when he came over.

Most definitely...I mean, today i read that the 9800gtx was on scan for 112 quid...I mean, if i was there, i would buy it without even thinking, but here things are quite highly priced. Anyways, so i should go with 8600gt on 1024x768 resolution, ddr3 512mb? I hope its worth it, even for dx10 games.

    Re: 256mb ddr3 or 1gb ddr2?

I got the 8600GT with 256MB and it games fine, F.E.A.R. running at 1280x1024 with all the details up and 2xAA. Almost 100% above 40fps slight dip to mid 30s for a short period. I had Oblivion running at 1280x1024 with medium grass etc. no AA no HDR and that was nice and smooth. Half Life 2 just looked superb I cannot remember the settings as my motherboard had a problem and had to be RMA'd

8600GT is good for that resolution with minimal AF/AA but I think it suffers once you ramp up the nice details.

8600GT is good for that resolution with minimal AF/AA but I think it suffers once you ramp up the nice details.
hmm, thanks sleepyhead, since my resolution would be a tad lower than yours, i can expect some what better results, plus the rest of my setup is not that bad either, I think it will work..
