    gtx260 and 4870

    Just quick issue for my build i wondering which better to get, i have CRT monitor, which runs 1600x1200 MAX res, so i was going towards 4870 but just wanted to check.

    basicaly two cards i thinking of:

    BFG Nvdia GTX 260 896mb OC

    AMD/ATI HD 4870 512 mb GDDR5

    Just wondering which better for my needs, am i right in saying 4870 will be fine for 1600x1200 gaming?? (this would be the max i would have it at no higher)
    cheers

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    the cooling for my spec is going to be following:

    CPU= watercooling loops
    hybrid anubis case with non stock fans x4 i belive.

    on graphics front do you all agree that this GTX bfg 260 is over kill for my 1600 x1200 res???

    or will 4870 be too under powerfull? or just perfect for me?

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    The GTX260 and HD4870 are around the same performace wise, the GTX260 is just less power hungry and cooler. a GTX280 would be over kill

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    Yes, the GTX260 is more expensive, but if you shop around then I'm sure you can get them around the £200 mark.

    Persoanlly, i would go for the GTX260 cos it is cooler and looks nicer . Just depends on your case etc.

    In some circumstances, the price difference is very little. For example.
    HD4870
    GTX260

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    Just got the new issue of Custom PC, they said that the GTX series actually runs hotter than the HD4 series while being louder too. I tend to trust Hexus and CPC for reviews so after reading Hexus's benchmarks I thought that the GTX260 was faster than the HD4870 but CPC's results seem to correlate with other sites: the HD4870 outperforms a GTX260 and in fact runs slightly cooler and much quieter.

    Hexus have said they are looking into updating their benchmarks.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    You might want to check your case will fit a GTX 260. Are the HD4870s shorter in length?

    I had real issues getting my 260 into my case - it almost got to the point where I thought I was going to have to get out the hacksaw:

    It's quiet when idle, and it's audible but not loud when in game. I think the drivers might be a bit buggy, because I don't think it properly returns to its idle fan speed after gaming... although I'm not quite sure about that yet.

    It appears to use slightly less power than my 8800 GTS 640 when idling, according to my watt meter, which is a pretty good result considering it's graphically about twice as powerful, and takes two 6-pin connectors rather than one.

    Would be nice to see what difference drivers have made and how the cards have matured. It seems that these 2 cards are so close performance wise, its almost neccesary to do more than 1 set of tests ^^.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    GTX260 will not be overkill;

    But HD4870 gets my vote as every major tech website and publication apart from Hexus have said that the HD4870 is faster than the GTX260.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    Shadowcreeper, it would be useful for you to post up your specs of your system, case cooling, power supply, games you play, how much you play games etc so that we can make a desicion. Overall, the HD4870 is the more powerful and cheaper card. However, if you have poor cooling and don't use the PC for alot of gaming, then the GTX260 would be better because it is cooler and uses less power at idle.

    It depends how much you want to spend, and alot of other factors and it is not easy for us to give you advice by saying A or B
