    ATI 1950XT to ???

    Hi everyone

Currently have a 1950XT (256Mb) and I've noticed that it's beginning to chug a bit in some games. Seeing as I've had it for around 2 years now I can't really complain can I !!

Is it worth upgrading to a 4850/70 or Nvidia equivalent? I'm kind of edging towards the "yes it is" answer myself but want to be sure that the performance improvement will be worthwhile.

    Thanks

    Adrian

    Re: ATI 1950XT to ???

I think that it would be...

How much do you want to spend, 100-120ish will get you a 4850, or a 9800GT, or 170-200ish will get you a 4870 or a 260 from nidiva.

I would go with the 4850/4870, (i got a 4850, which is great, especially compaired to my 4series nidiva card!!!), which preform about the same as the 9800GT/260, some say a bit better, but are hotter.

Also the 4850/4870 are smaller than the 9800GT/260.

Yep just go for a 4850. Its simply a steal and very powerful. Can get for as little as £115 if you google around.

Same card as yourself, and am also contempalting getting the 4850.

Trouble is, I keep doing this every year! First it's a new MOBO and CPU. Then I start to think; it would be nice to get some more ram with that, etc. etc.

    First post, BTW.

    well duh

    Back on topic:
While the 4850 is looking like a fine card for the price, for me the stock cooler just istn't up to scratch for such a hot chip. and while you can replace the cooler that will add a good chunk to the cost.
The AKASA Vortexx NEO is the one I would go for at this time so that's another £20,
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=810140

So 116+20= £136 total, the new 9800gtx+ is on preorder for £130, this is basically an overclocked 9800gtx and does beat the 4850 (but not the 4870) in all the test I've seeen so far eg http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=14351&page=8
The stock cooler on the 9800gtx is great, however the main issues with this card are size and power.
The two power sockets on it seem to be overkill for the amount of power it requires, but it is going to use more power connectors from the PSU (AFAIK it requires both to be pluged in or it'll do the graphics card shreek at you and not start up)

If you cannot wait for the 9800gtx+ to come out, now is a good time to get a 9800gtx as a few places are now selling them off cheap to clear the stock so you should be able to pick one up for £130 or less (got mine from scan on sale for £112)

That said the same should be true for the 8800gt and 3870 (should be some cheap deals going if you look) yes not as fast as the newer card but still good and a decent step up from a x1900

Or get one of the ones with an upgraded cooler built in.

Like this, plus you get one gb of ram not like you are going to use it though

I have a X1900XT myself and am in the same boat aswell. I just saw my dad upgrade his computer last week which included a 4870 and it does run some games very well. I might be tempted to buy one very very soon myself.
