Bus powered graphics card for COD4?

My nephew has just bought COD4, without checking the hardware specs (as a 13 year old does!) and now finds that he needs a new graphics card to play his new game. Luckily for him, it's his birthday soon.

Here's the problem. They have a fairly new Dell desktop machine. They should have a suitable PCI-E slot (I'm waiting for my sister to give me information so I can check), but the problem is the power connector. Knowing Dell, there will be no spare power connectors for a graphics card, so I need a recommendation.

He's only playing on an old 17" TFT, so doesn't need to run at honking great resolutions (probably 1280x1024 maximum).

Can someone suggest a bus powered graphics card which would let him play COD4 at this sort of resolution? Bonus points for cheapness!

    Cheers

    Steve

£40, and it looks bus powered.

Yeah, the HD3650 is only £40 now as well. Anything more powerful would probably need extra power connectors...

Re: Bus powered graphics card for COD4?

I would get a 9500GT as this is bus powered and has performance between that of a 8600GT and 8600GTS(around 10% slower than a 8600GTS actually).

I think the OP was saying that the Dell wouldn't have any spare power connectors, and wouldn't the 3650 need at least a 6 pin pci-e? Or am I just being dumb?

    I've found this:

Doesn't look like it's got a power connector to me?

Re: Bus powered graphics card for COD4?

HD3650 doesn't need any extra power than the PCIe bus provides.

Have you any extra molex (4-pin) connectors? If so, you could get something like this to convert 2 molex sockets into a single PCIe power socket. It would open up things like the HD4850 or HD3850 (if you're on a tight budget) to you.

Need to be quite frugal, as the PSU in the machine presumably hasn't been rated for high-end power draw.

Re: Bus powered graphics card for COD4?

Yeah I'd recommend getting a molex (hdd, floppy etc.) to PCI-E connector. Dell PSUs are usually very high quality and the low rating is more like an average continual draw than a maximum.

you need to see what cables are spare, 2 4pin molex (the ones that fit old cd drives) and your in business as you get a 2x4 into 6 pin cable for the viddy card

Thanks everyone. I think I've got a few options now. Just need to find out if there are any spare power connectors and slots.

IMO if your going to upgrade do it properly i.e. get a half decent psu as well as a decent graphics card. Don't be surprised when your pc freezes or suddenly reboots when COD gets a little intensive when the poor old psu can't deliver.

I have used this psu without problem - a bargain at under £22

A 8600GT will play CoD4 without any connectors. I used to have one, but it's probably not the best choice.

Re: Bus powered graphics card for COD4?

    Surely a £30 budget PSU http://www.ginger6.com/antec-earthwa...l-p-27647.html + £50 ATI HD 3850 256Mb http://www.ginger6.com/xpertvision-2...l-p-30088.html would be a decent option?

Confirm you have both a PCI-E x16 port and standard size PSU beforehand.
