First HD4670 512MB review!!

Seems to be a bit slower than a HD3850 512mb. However as with all the recent ATI cards future drivers may yield some additional performance benefits! Much faster than a 9500GT which is not bad for a bus powered card.

A slight disappointment in the performance stakes, but I suspect that will influence the price.

With branded 3850 512mb cards going for 50-ish GBP, a price in the 40s (for the 4670) would be very welcome - a near-perfect HTPC or general use card in terms of price/performance.

That's about where I expected it to be I think. Yeah it would have been nice to make it as good as the 3850 but it's not bad at all and if it there are at least some mainstream passive versions I would be quite happy with on in an HTPC.

The HD3850 and HD3870 are EOL anyway which will be probably be followed soon by the HD3450/70 and HD3650. The AMD range will be as follows:

Low end(RV710):

HD4350/HD4550??

Middle range(RV730)

HD4650/HD4670

Enthusiast range(RV770)

HD4850/HD4870

High end(R700)

HD4850X2/HD4870X2

Does not seem a very confusing line up to me?? There are only 4 different models with a "low" and "high" version only differentiated by the clockspeed of the core and the ram.

I see it as this

HD34**, HD 46** , HD48** represnts which range it falls into, cheap, mid, high

and the second pair of numbers is where it falls in that range. **50 low , ** 70 high **70X2 very high lol

Yes but nvidia released in fairly quick succesion,

The 8800GT 256mb, 8800GS, 9600GT, 8800GTS (while the old GTS was still on the shelves)

The first 3 of which essentially did the same thing. The 9600GT should have replaced the 8600GT.. but didn't.

They then replaced the 8800GTS 512mb with the 65nm 9800GTX which had the same core and then this was replaced by the 9800GTX+ which had a 55nm core.

The 8800GS was renamed 9600GSO and the 8500GT became the 9400GT.The 9500GT is basically a 55nm 8600GT/8600GTS. Then what about the 8400GS which had 16 shader versions and 8 shader versions?? The 9800GT is also a 55nm or 65nm version of the 8800GT!! Now they are introducing a new model with 216 shaders between the GTX260 and GTX280 which may also be called GTX260???

I'm looking for a card to replace my 7300GT in my Htpc/casual gaming machine.

If the cost/noise and powerlevels are good I be more likely to get this card. I wanted a dual slot HD4850 but I'm not sure If I play enough games justify the £100+ cost

The HD4670 reference model is bus powered so it needs no additional power connectors. This means that you can use a relatively low powered PSU for this card unlike some of the slightly higher up models. I just hope that the UK retailers do not start increasing the initial price hugely(like they done in the past) as the HD3850 is still a faster card!
