XtremeVision 9800 GX on fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI

Hi all,

Just tried to rig up the system specified in "My System" (on the right) and am getting no video output from the 9800.

The internal speaker gives 1 long beep, then 2 short beeps which in most systems indicates a problem with the graphics card.

I have tried running in a minimal configuration (RAM, CPU, VID Card and 1 SATA HDD) and the problem persists.

I have tried reseating the card twice. I have plugged in a power supply directly to the card from the PSU and have also plugged in the additional PCI-E(xpress) power socket from the PSU.

I have tried reseating/reconfiguring the RAM. When the RAM was entirely removed the correct POST speaker error of a repeated long beep was issued; seems the RAM is fine.

The minimal configuration included running nothing else off the PSU (which is 550w).

I have tried resetting the CMOS battery.

I unfortunately do not have another card to test with.

Any ideas?

Update: Getting a friend to bring over another PCI-Express card to test with this evening

I'd strip it right back.

Run CPU and Motherboard only. Turn on and it should beep indicating it needs RAM. I don't have my PC so I can't test to tell you what the beep combo is. I think it's a two tone siren noise.

Next add RAM, turn on and you'll get a different beep code for no gfx card.

Keep adding bits until you finished built or you find the problem area.

At any stage whereby the beep codes don't change, that'll be your area of problem (most likely). Then it's a case of having known good components to use as a test bed.

Hey sleephead - many thanks for the response.

That's exactly what I did - the response for RAM was a long beep, then a pause, then a long beep, then a pause etc.

The problem is at the GFX card stage - the response is the same when I run with or without the GFX card - just a long beep then 2 short beeps. My reckoning is that either the GFX card is a dud or the PCI-Express port is damaged. As I said, hoping to find out which this evening!

Mis-read your opening post hence my reply. Sorry about that.

At least you are going the logical route so far. As long as your friends GFX card is a known working card, then that'll help quantify if the motherboard is shot. Also it's best to test your GFX card in his motherboard to ensure it's not both components that have failed.

There is also an outside chance of the PSU being the culprit too so if you can get your mate to bring over his working PSU, you'd have another avenue to investigate.

Well, if there's any justice in the world, his GFX card will work and I can RMA the 9800.

If his card doesn't work it had occurred to me also that both components might be faulty - I'll have to be very nice and ask very kindly for him to try out the card in his machine!

Please let it be the card - I don't want to have to unscrew all my precious work on getting the MOBO wired up!

My mate's GFX card didn't work in the PCI slot either - so it looks like the Mobo was DOA. Just to verify the card works I've sent it home with him tonight to check.

Doubt it's a PSU issue as the card he brought was one of the older 6600 series that don't require their own power.

Damn, RMAing the Mobo is a pain.

Ok - easy answer - the BIOS needs flashing to support the CPU. (That's what Scan claim, so it is heading off back there!)
