Just got myself a Sapphire Dual Slot 4850 from ebuyer. The only other dual slot I've seen in stock is the Toxic and that costs £155!

I havent seen one of those, any links? or is it the one with just the big fan on? That doesnt really interest me as i'd the heat to be blown out of the case

As the HIS iceq is released in a couple of weeks tops and will be around the £130 I dont think its really worth it.

I'd aviod it tbh, dumping the heat straight in to the case is silly when you can get a card that exhausts it. The extra RAM also provides very little performance boost on the 4850 as its crippled by the bus bandwidth.

No it's not - the 4870 uses the same bus but the higher speed ram is very much able to be taken advantage of.

Weird I've heard that 1gb on the 4850 is near pointless. From just about everything i've read on the subject bar your comment, of course the sources could be wrong though.

There is just one review I know that compares 1GB version Vs 512MB one. I'm not sure where you got your info from tbh.

techpowerup emulated 4870 1GB with an X2 card and run lots of benchmarks against 512MB card. Results are weird anyway.
If you know other review with proper 1GB card please let us know

Thanks for the info. I've just read "1gb on a 256bit bus is pointless, you won't get any benefit from the extra 512mb at all." so many countless times on other forums so I didnt really question it tbh. Thanks for the link though, will have a read

My comment doesn't say anything about amount of memory - I was talking about memory bus.

It's probable that going to 1gb of ram on the 4850 is pointless, however that will have nothing at all to do with the 256bit bus, as the 4870 shares that exact same memory bus width, yet can perform at much higher levels given faster memory and clock speed.

    Re: 4850 ICEQ Card??

Does anyone have any more info on this 1GB vs 512MB video memory issue?

Basically, I am after a 4850 and it's boiled down to the 512MB Sapphire for £111.92 at PC World or the 1GB Asus for £122.19 at SCAN. Yes, it's only £10 difference, and I would be looking to get an aftermarket cooler for either of them.

Part of me thinks, sod it, it's only £10, what harm can it do having the extra RAM, as I will be keeping the card for 18 months probably. Then, the other part of me reasons it probably won't make any perceptible difference in the games I play, limited to 1600x1200, and in situations where it might make a difference the framerates of any 4850 card will probably be unplayable anyway! But then it's only £10!

Any objective information would be gratefully received.

I went and got the Sapphire from PC World today, got it for a great price, so I thought I might as well!
