Vista affecting aspect ratio?

Hi there,

I just installed Vista Business, and I'm having slight monitor issues. Before, on XP, i'm sure my monitor was set to 1280x1024 and looked perfect (I think this is the native res), now it's set the same but looks stretched horizontally. Anyone have ideas what could be causing this? Cheers,

Ah, just discovered that the native res is 1380 x 1050 (never even heard of that one), and it's not an option in the control panel settings. I've set it to 1360 x 1024, and it does look better.

Forgot to say, it's a samsung 205BW 20"

I have that monitor and the res is actually 1680x1050

If you haven't already done so, install the latest drivers for your graphics card and you should see it as your maximum selectable resolution

Thanks konigen, I tried what you suggested, installed the latest drivers, and it's still got 1360 x 1024 as the second highest, and 1440 by 900 as the highest - even in the catalyst suite...

Strange - try telling XP to show all resolutions ie. unhide the ones it thinks your monitor can't display and then try selecting 1680x1050 (Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Monitor - there's a tick-box)

By the way - a curiosity in this screen's settings for you: You should select the sharpness of your monitor to be 16 to get the best picture - I think it comes pre-set to 20 which applies some sharpening which is bad (IMO)

I tried getting control panel to show other resolutions and the correct one still wasn't on there! This is a pain - thanks for your help BTW

Have you triued installing the drivers for your monitor in Vista? I had the same issue when using a KVM switch since Vista would not recognise my Phillips monitor properly.Installed the driver and I could get the native resolution!!

OK, so I still haven't solved this problem and it's getting on my nerves now!

When I try to install the driver from the Samsung website, I get an error message saying:
"setup.exe has stopped working
A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

Anyone got any experience with this? I've tried re-downloading the file and this hasn't helped

Have you tried extracting the Samsung exe file to a folder and then accessing the installer directly??

Are you running the setup file as administrator??

The driver installed OK, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference!

Try this:

Use Winzip or 7-zip to extract the Samsung exe file to a folder on your desktop.

Go to Control Panel and select Personalisation.Click on display settings.Go to advanced settings.Select monitor.Click properties. Click the driver tab and click update driver.Browse your computer for driver software. Select the folder where the Samsung exe is located. Press Ok and the monitor driver should be installed fine. I just tried this in Vista and it works fine so hopefully it should work for your monitor!

What gfx card do you have?

I'm sure on one of my PC's I had to check a tickbox to enable 16:9/15:10 aspect ratios......having said that, if they're offering 1440x900, then that might not be the problem.

Hello again.
I thought I would resurrect this thread as I still haven't solved the problem. I got myself a macbook, so have mostly been using that lately. I'm completely fed up with the res now - I've made sure my GPU and monitor drivers are up to date, SP1 is installed, and 1680 x 1050 is nowhere to be seen!
