    Widescreen TFT's?

Right then. I'm looking to build a new machine in a few months, but I've got really used to working on the widescreen of my laptop (1680x1050 - Dell 8500 - very nice machine that I can wholeheartedly recommend). Do widescreen TFT's exist, and what sort of price/performance can I expect?

Please dont mention the Apple CinemaView screens - they are out of budget and too sexeh

There are quite a few 19" TFTs about, but they only do 1280x1024. The problem is I've got used to working with this screen (mainly Java development, so the extra real estate is very useful). Also I dont think I can go back to CRT - there's no comparison IMHO - whenever I use a CRT now it looks like everything has gone soft focus

Yeah, that's maybe slightly more than I was looking to spend!

a *very* good monitor looks better than a tft imo. i have a pair of £550 19" dimontron nf screens and they're simply amazing.. as clear as a tft in my opinion

I used to work on a 350 quid LG Flatron, which was good, but the TFT in my laptop blows it away really.

you're not gonna get a desktop tft with the resolution you're after. widescreens exist, but in the region of 1024x600 res.

a better bet is dualhead with two 17" screens, especially screens with tiny bezels like the iiyama prolite e431s

Aye Beeney, my lappy's UltraSharp 16x12 screen blows all other TFTs I've seen away for resolution and sharpness, mainly down to the improved DPI. Why oh why can't Dell etc put these panels in normal LCD monitors?

Samsung do a nice 17" widescreen TFT, although you might want something a bit larger...

the reason you dont get hi-res tft screens is afaik because putting 1600x1200 on a 15 or 17" panel is very nearly as expensive as putting htem on a 21" panel.. therefore the manufactures dont bother as they know people would rather pay an extra £50 and get 6" more space
