Graphics card for a AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Single Core

Hi, I am looking to update my graphics card but don't know whats overkill because of my CPU (AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Single Core) or what's going to be the best price for the performance. My power supply is 550watts with 35 amps on the 12v rail. My monitor is 1280 by 1024. Looking at buying from Scan because of the free shipping and because I trust them, even though this may cost a bit more. Willing to spend up to £100. Do they all come with 4 to 6 pin adapters in the box? One other question I have 2GB of ram running in dual channel is this better than running 3GB?

Been looking at some of these:
    256MB XFX 8800GT £58.74 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=752287
    348MB XFX 9600GSO £66.93 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=870485
    512MB XFX 9600GT £78.71 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=845006
    512MB XFX 8800GT £96.21 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=778183

just seen most if not all of these are on today only page at Scan but only a few pounds cheaper so will not waste time and change all the prices and links.

Feel free to suggest other cards than the ones I have linked to.

The ATi HD4670. Around £60 and a lot of performance for 1280 x 1024 and gets all it's power from the mobo if memory serves but yes when they do require 6 pins they will come with a 4 pin (molex) to 6 pin.

You could always go for a cheap dual core as well, 939's are hard to come by though if that's what you need.

I would have to update my motherboard to get dual core its a s939 and all the x2 on s939 are gone. I would like to stick with Nvidia really as it's a sli motherboard and heard bad things about ati drivers.

Nothing wrong with the ATi drivers really but at your res either of the first 2 will do. No need to spend much more than that. I wouldn't buy xfx though.

yeah heard that about xfx are they really that bad though? They seem to be on a promotion at scan as they have one of the cheapest cards in each series. They have 2 year warranty and the first year is down to scan thats all I would need it for at most till new pc and have the old 8500gt's(replacement for my 6600gt's by mesh nice swap ehh, not!) as back up. I have been warned I suppose. What about the 6pin adapter do they usually come in the box with new cards.

Yeah the adapter will be there. Never seen one that didn't come with it in the box.

Yes it is. The extra memory bandwidth of dual channel makes all the diference. Have you overclocked your CPU at all, it is possible to get 2.8ghz which helps performance alot, as in FX57 levels.

BTW, I've got the same CPU and I'm considering getting a GTX280, I must be mad lol. Mind you. Consider 2 things: All games still seem much more GPU limited for me still on my single core CPU, so a big GPU upgrade may be worth it. Also, a motherboard and cpu upgrade in the future will also benefit from a greater GPU bought now. Spending less than £100 on a GPU is probably much more sense though.

What about an HD4850 for about £100? Great card. Good idea? http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=883439

Re: Graphics card for a AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Single Core

Instead of the money spent on a gtx 280 I would think you would get better performance getting a cheap 7200 dual core and a 4850 etc. The AMD 4000 is pretty old technology now, especially as it's single core, it will probably bottleneck your gpu.

I've got a athlon 3200 and thought about getting a graphics card upgrade(have 6600GT at the moment), but think I will go for a dual core, it's been made even easier by the fact that the PSU went bang the other day, and I need a better case for cooling, might as well replace everything

I'm planning to upgrade modo/CPU/RAM later, at least a 7200 or more likely get an 8400 or better.
