Bad Nvidia experience. Quiet Radeon recommendations?

I just bought a 9800GT but couldn't get it working with Vista.

Can anyone recommend a good, quiet Radeon that would give me similar or better performance?

The HD4850 is what you want, possibly one with an aftermarket cooler. The stock one is quiet but runs very hot.

Re: Bad Nvidia experience. Quiet Radeon recommendations?

Oh if your looking at Scan ignore the Palit one for £103 if it is anything like the cooler on the 9800GT I just put in somebodies PC (looks the same) you will be tearing your hair out, fan doesn't appear to have any control runs at 100% until the drivers are loaded then 55% all attempts to turn it down using nTune, Rivatuner and even flashing the bios didn't work in fact in rivatuner if you turned it down the fan speed actually went up and if you turned it up it went up as well!

Finally I disconnected the fan and ziptied a quiet 92mm on top improved the cooling and its silent but now its a triple slot design.

So it might be that the 4850 version has a fan controller but I wouldn't bet on it especially if you are after quiet.

The Sapphire dual slot design may be just right for you, available from eBuyer for £114 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148468 or if Scan is more to your liking then it is on Today only this weekend for £115 http://scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx (scroll down about 3/4 of the way)

HD4850 from Asus - mines rather quiet in comparison to my housemates Palit, which does exactly what Webby describes.

Speaking of Sapphire HD 4850s, is there anything wrong with the SAPPHIRE HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E? PC World have it for £111 so I could pick it up today.

Nothing wrong with it exactly but that is the stock cooler. Quiet though it is, it does run the card hot.

FYI you can get a ton of free business cards from the ATI site, 2 of my brothers have them already.

Lol you can get business cards with or without a purchase, I got a pack for kicks but I'd never use them.

I had a noise issue with my 4870 cooler and found that the card runs hot (due to bios or something). Did some research and found this app Ati Tray Tools which allows allsorts of options and monitoring including fan speed control (it's a brilliant tool). You can then get the temps down a very long way.

Download it, install, right click icon in taskbar tray > Hardware > Overclocking Settings > Fan (Tab) and go from there.

Nice choice and remember, you can always put an After-Market-Cooler on it if it is too noisey / hot.

If you got the sapphire I suggested then it should be neither too noisy nor run hot.

Hopefully this card will serve you well!
