Which Graphics Card of these three?

Looking to build a new box, mid range gaming WoW , CoD4 etc. and trying to put together list of components. I may be using LN24160 Gigabyte EP45-DS3L Motherboard (See my thread in Hardware for the system I'm thinking of, sorry can't post links yet).

Budget is a max of around £120.

So far the following three from Scan have caught my eye ....

    LN24318 512MB XFX 9800GT XXX, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), 1800MHz GDDR3, GPU 670MHz, 112 Cores, 2xDL DVI-I/ HDTV £113.96

    LN24010 1GB Gainward 9800GT Bliss GS, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), 1900+MHz GDDR3, GPU 650+MHz, 112 Cores, 2xDLDVI/ HDTV £118.52

    LN23880 512MB ScanFX 9800GTX+, PCI-E 2.0(x16), 2200MHz GDDR3, GPU 738MHz, 128 Cores, 2x DL DVI-I/ HDTV £117.48

Haven't built a box for a while so am not up to speed on recent graphics cards so any thoughts/experience of these would be appreciated.

For instance would the GTX+ 512MB be a better buy than the GT 1GB ??

Is the XFX 9800GT XXX a faster card ? Thought I'd read it was a good card but perhaps the GTX+ is better?

Of course if you know of a better card for similar money then I'd be happy to hear about that too.

Re: Which Graphics Card of these three?

Answered your other thread but the HD4850 from ATi.

If you want the nvidias get the 9800GTX+ runs cooler and is more efficent than the older 9800GTX.

Re: Which Graphics Card of these three?

Oh and the 9800GTX+ blows the 9800GT (no matter how much memory) out of the water performance wise.

I am however with Mike look at the HD4850s (but ignore the Palit one, the cooler is rubbish unless you happen to like the sound of jet planes taking off.)

Re: Which Graphics Card of these three?

the 9800GTX+ seems like a sensible buy, go for that?

and what Webby said about Palit's coolers, i can say that is true. I bought a Palit 8800GT (with an aftermarket cooler on it) this march and the fan was constant 100% and it was louder than most planes!

Re: Which Graphics Card of these three?

Guess it would be the GTX+ out of these three then.

Interested in the ATI 4850 though but was a little concerned reading the following in a review on ebuyer ............

Had this card a while and have to say for it's price it blazzingly fast in 3D games. Only grip is that I'm having 100% GPU problem when viewing webpages with animated gifs on them in XP, This problem goes as far back as 2001 with ATI drivers. It's not the card thats at fault it's definatly the drivers. Trying to work it out with ATI customer care as I really like this card.

Anyone here had any experience of this issue or found a cure?

Re: Which Graphics Card of these three?

I really find these sort of benchmarks/reviews intresting.
on over half the games the 9800gt is level pegging with the 4850, and the 4850 oc is level pegging with the 9800gtx+
On the remaining games the stock 4850 beats both the 9800gt and 9800gtx+
There is very little difference between between a £120 and a £200 card
but when you look at the end, all of the card fail at 1920x1200, (well fair to get 60fps) which does make me wonder why so many people are get the big high res screens.

Back to the topic, it depends of what your screen res is, if you have a 17-19" screen then the 9800gt is going to be more than enough.
if you have a 20-22" the 9800gt is still good but a 9800gtx+ or 4850 is better

Ati always seem to disapoint me with there stock coolers, the one on the 4870 doesn't seem too bad. that Iceq cooler looks very good but it add to the cost as it's £135
So for you're stuck with the bad stock cooler (adding an after market cooler pushes up the price to much) which makes that 9800gtx+ for £117 look even better

Re: Which Graphics Card of these three?

The is always the Sapphire duel slot 4850 can be found for less than £115 or the Powercolor Play or PCS+ versions are both ~£120 all on eBuyer. Of te Powercolor the PCS+ is the better card as it has a higher factory overclock, unless you fancy the native HDMI or displayport offered by the Play.

Re: Which Graphics Card of these three?

The only PCS+ one seems to a 1GB version at £140 which would be nice but a bit over budget, unless I save a bit elsewhere in the system build.

I had one of those Palit 8800GT cards. Sent it back, got one that looks identical but the fan speed adjusts properly and it is quite a nice card. Palit claimed they hadn't had any complaints other than mine about 100% fan speed, which I kind of hope has to be incompetence else with the number of people I have seen on the web with this trouble they would have to be lying

Looking at the Iceq 512MB and the PCS+ 1GB.

Would the higher OC of the Iceq be better advantage or would the 1GB of the PCS+ be more worthwhile?

I just got one of those, excellent card. The cooler is one of the best you can get at the moment, better than the Iceq3 according to some reviews. And it comes with a modest overclock, which I upped as soon as I got it

1gb (on any card) is only really useful at very high resolutions, what size monitor are you using?

For that budget I'd get the 4850, it has around even performance with similar nvidia offerings however once you turn on AA the 4850 steams ahead.
