Best graphics card under £100

Hey all

Basically I am planning to update soonish, but I can't afford to do it all in one go at the moment. Since I think my 7900gt is damaged as it artficats like mad, I was thinking of doing this first.

I saw (512MB Palit HD4850 on Scan - I can't use URL's yet >.<] and it seems pretty good to me. Does anyone have anything better they can reccommend?

Current system:

Amd Athlon 3700+ @ 2.2 ghz
7900gt
2gb ram

Thanks

The only thing to be aware of is that the Palit cards fan may be set to 100% all the time which will make it the noisiest thing in the world!

Save up an extra few pennies and go for one of the other cards that are available for £105-115

Or go the other way and get a fairly wonderful 4670, cheaper, easier on power requirements and cooler, albeit less graphical grunt. Still good though.

The 4850 is the one to go for the £100 mark.

If you want something cheaper than the 4670 as mentioned by MSIC mentioned is excellent value for performance. However, I'm disappointed the 4670 came out more expensive than originally planned (£50).

Re: Best graphics card under £100

Okay so after thinking, the 4670 is like £50 cheaper and I would really like to save that money. Is there a massive difference between the two? How is it compared to a 7900gt?

I only really play TF2 and a few other games, so I'm not looking to max out crysis or anything.

Re: Best graphics card under £100

The 4670 is generally viewed as comparable to the previous generation's 3850.
Of course, the architecture between DX9 and DX10 means a direct comparison to a 7900 is perhaps a little unfair, then again you want to play games on them, so let's do a direct comparison
I've had to chose a 256MB 3850 (which will not be 100% accurate, but will give a flavour) verses a 7950GT (a bit better than yours, but again will give a flavour).
Toms Hardware:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts...d[2092]=on

Generally 2 to 3 times faster. Of course, a 4850 will be faster again, but you pays your money, you takes your choice

Re: Best graphics card under £100

I went for the Asus HD4850 at a touch over £100, and its been fine.

A hell of a lot quieter than my housemates Palit, due to the aftermarket fan having a better (read it exists, lol) fan controller.

4850 is a great card for around £100. Best bang for buck.

Re: Best graphics card under £100

Well I read about the 4830 coming out soon, but I think for the extra £20 it would be best to go for a 4850. Especially considering that I game at 1920x1200

Thanks for the help

A guy at work just picked up a 4670 and is loving it. I think it really depends on what you are doing with the card - but the games he plays (TF2 mostly), apparently run perfectly on it. I've been considering one myself...Either that or some more disk D:

I'd save up £10 and get a 4850 palit edition from scan, it's the best priceerformance card out at the moment, I mean for £110 you can max out any game out whereas 1 year ago it would've costed you £400 for a 8800 gtx.

They are different divisions of the same company.

I do wish people would stop saying that the 4850 is the best £100 card, as it's over £100.
The majority are between £115-120

Now gratned that the Plait ont is a whole £2.80 over £100 but that's still over.
Sorry to split hairs but when I see "Best graphics card under £100" I assume the person means £80-90ish

To which my answer is This
4670 with a decent aftermarket cooler

This leads me onto my other major objection to the "4850 is the best £100 card" namely the stock cooler is
Now I may be parranoid about temps but +80c under load is not exceptable and I think I'm fairly safe, seeing some of the 4850 failier reports.
Please note this is not the chip generateing too much heat, just the inability of the cooler to dissapate it.

So if you add on the cost of a good aftermarket cooler or card with a good aftermarket cooler (like the HIS IceQ) you're pushing that price up another £15-20 so this £100 card is actually costing £130-140ish

PS I what PSU have you got? that could be the reason for the troubles with the 7900gt and if that's the case then your 4850 will not last long.
7900 GT idel=23W load=48W
4850 idel=41W load=110W
4850 overclocked to 800/1250 idel=64W load=133W

Another smallish rant, the 4670 is very low power when idel (10w), not under load (70w),
it's low power compaired to high end cards, but it is not a high end card, compaire it to the 3850 which performs around the same.
idle=14W load=63W
