getting 2x 24", suggestions please?

i currently have 1 of these
but my dad is wanting to buy a 24" monitor and i want another 1..
so he's gonna take mine and i'm gonna get 2x 24" monitors..

any suggestions to some 24" monitors?
preferably with small bezels.
been saving up for a while so i've got £600 to spend on these..

thanks

might aswell include the GFX card thread in here aswell..

any suggestions for a good GFX card?
prefer nVidia to ATi, but if it's worth switching, i'll consider it..
~£200 for this..

Re: getting 2x 24", suggestions please?

The only 24" I've used is a Dell 2407 and going by the picture on Scan the 2408 has a thinner bezel (the buttons at the bottom right look the same size as on mine but take up a larger percentage of the bezel).

I'm also fond of Iiyama and Viewsonic monitors. Others may be better these days, but their monitors have always done me well in the past.

What are your main uses for the monitor going to be? Different panel technologies suit different things if your current Samsung fits your needs then why not get a couple more? If it doesn't do something you want then what would you like it to do better?

Re: getting 2x 24", suggestions please?

Hmm... we use dual Dell 2407s and 2408s at work. Can't say I've noticed the bezels being any thinner on the new 2408s. 2408WFP has a few fancy things like display port - can't say I'm bothered. Also, if you've got £600 for 2x24", i.e. £300 each, then I'm not sure the 2408 is in your range - they're over £400 each I believe

Dell S2409 is still <£200 inc VAT and shipping, but is 1920x1080 rather than 1920x1200. Or that Samsung 245 is still very popular and well recommended by many.

Pricing sweet spot for monitors seems to be around the 22" size, so would you consider dual 16x10 resolution? Also, if you care about accurate colours for high-end photo/design work, then these cheap 24" monitors aren't the thing to get.

mainly just everyday PC use.. homework, MSN, gaming, that sort of thing.. nothing like CAD or photo editing that require perfect colour representation and stuff..

i'd rather have the 1920 x 1200 reso. if possible..

are Dell monitors good?
good colour representation?
good response times?
would HDMI be possible on any 24" monitor under £300?

anyone got any GFX card options?

Go for a 1GB variant of the 4870 - it's what I'm planning on, and adding an aftermarket cooler to that eventually.

Ah, my bad, I was looking at the E248WFP on Scan which my over taxed brain managed to add a 0 into the model number

Dell have had problems in the past. Hell there's even a wiki page about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_monitors

The TN (cheaper) panels seem to have better response times, but are 6-bit panels dithered to simulate 16 millions colours. I have no issue with the colour representation on my S2409, but then I'm worse than -8 dioptres in both eyes

My S2409 also has HDMI as well as DVI and VGA (what's the point of that on a new monitor? *tsk*), but there's not much benefit IMHO as you could just run through a DVI-HDMI converter. If your LCD monitor or TV has integrated sound and you use a new Radeon HD4xxx you can apparently transmit the audio over HDMI too.

VGA is very handy if your laptop only has VGA out..

I'm almost always very unhappy with dell value panels, I would stick to LG/Samsung for TN's myself.

Dell UltraSharps are generally very nice though, the S-PVA or IPS panels are very slick

One thing though, you you really need 2x 24" screens? £600 is a lot of money and it could go towards something like a 24" Wide ( 2408WFP would probably get my money) and a 20" wide which you could run portrait (some do some dont) which is very handy for Word documents etc..

well i did actually think about the portrait monitor.. but it looks hard to set up, and i sort of want them to match..
any ideas on which monitors to get for the portrait and 24"?
£600 still being the budget..

Re: getting 2x 24", suggestions please?

Well I dunno about some but all I do to my dell (2007wfp) is turn it to portrait.. the image changes and you're away.

This is what it will look like potentially

If you could squeeze a 2007wfp into they budget they are great, S-PVA panel (worst case) or if you are lucky an IPS panel.

2nd on the list
http://www.itcsales.co.uk/acatalog/2..._Displays.html

You could almost fit a 2709wfp and 2007wfp into the budget

My main concern with having dual 24" monitors is that when i'm using my dual setup, one screen is almost always playing a movie full screen and even on my 19" screen I think I'm a bit close to it when it's on my desk. I actually use my laptop more now so my 13.3" screen plays the movie

A Dell 24" and a Iiyama 17" turned to portrate will match up just about perfectly, both in terms of resolution and in physical height. This is what I was going to have.

Nvidia drivers let you rotate individular monitors, and I suspect so do ATI.

Re: getting 2x 24", suggestions please?

Yep I can confirm the ati drivers will allow you to rotate a single screen if that is your desire

I would probably be going with a 24" plus a portrait monitor as well personally far more versitile and makes working in word a lot easier probably would go for a 20" or 22" for the portrait panel, wont match in pixel height or bezel height etc but would be more useful than a 17-19" screen imo.
