    9800GX2 EVGA Power problem

Having just installed my EVGA nvidia 9800GX2 gfx card I've noticed it requries an 8pin as a well as a 6pin slot. However my PSU only has two 6 pin plugs available. According to the manual both are required and a 6pin plugged into the 8pin port is "not supported".
Searching the net it may be that only the overclocking element requires the 8pin plug in order to work, and without it it'd simply be a standard setting.
Can someone confirm this before I consider proceeding?
If this isn't the case, is it possible to buy a converter for a 6pin to 8pin adaption? Any links to online shops with such items would be appreciated (bear in mind I'm in the UK).
    Thanks a lot.

I know that you could use 2x 6 pin on the 2900XT and that disabled the overclocking but have no idea about the 9800GX2.

What power supply do you have?

    Re: 9800GX2 EVGA Power problem

Yeah, while it may be fine I would suggest getting a new power supply you don't want to kill your entire PC really, oh and this is a quality issue rather than a wattage issue.

Look for a decent 500-700W PSU and that will be more than adequate, the corsair VX550 or VX650 would be on my shortlist £58 and £65 respectively, if you can spend more and modular cables appeal to you then the Corsair HX520 or HX620 are worth a look (but they do cost more! £68 and £85)

I had the exact same problem. Im pretty sure it wouldn't work if you tried to connect the 6pin plug into the 8pin slot on the card...definately wouldn't try it anyway!

Here's what I did anyway...the PSU ive got is the Corsair HX520W and it didnt come with the 8pin plug, so I contacted the Corsair support team and they happily shipped out the connector with no hassle whatsoever.

Now bearing in mind that I have no experience with the PSU that your using, but I cant imagine something that cheap with that much 'power' is any good. Dont take the chance mate, it probably has a hard time producing 300W cleanly and would most likely blow if asked to produce 400W. Look into getting a higher quality unit with a good known brand The newer PSU's should ship with cable that your looking for aswell

Thanks for your advice guys, after looking about the internet I decided to play it safe so I've gone with a Hiper Type M 880W PSU as it comes with an 8 pin connector and is reasonably priced.

Whatever you do..DONT!!!!! Your playing with fire if your going to get that hiper! (heh that rhymes) but seriously just play it safe mate and stick with the known brands..such as: (most of these are modular aswell )
Enermax (highly recommended, top of the list)
    Corsair
    Seasonic
    Tagan
