my graphics card 1/8th's my download rate

i'm using a Belkin 54mbps wireless adapter, and i recieve a good 800kbps download rate with it. but as soon as i begin folding with the GPU client or playing a game, my download rate drops right down to about 90kbps..

is my graphics card actually interfering?

do graphics cards create some sort of 'disturbance' while they're working?

i can actually hear my graphics card working with a very slight high pitched squeal whenever it's under load, is this normal aswell?

thanks in advance for any help

Re: my graphics card 1/8th's my download rate

Not your graphics card, but more likely your CPU.

Doing folding on your GPU still puts a near 100% load on your CPU, as it has to deal with the backend and sort out the problems into streams the GPU can deal with (and process the answers). Unless you have a hardware network controller then handling all the network communications also requires CPU power, but if you're already using 100% then there's little left.

Disk and memory bandwidth are further factors as well.

The whine on 100% GPU load is also fairly common - it's just all the PVMs dealing with full power.

To check if you're getting EMI with your wireless signal, look at the signal strength - if that drops when using the card then maybe you have a shielding problem.

800mbps? Thats one far into the future wifi card. I'd say that the folding client is uploading or downloading data that causes you to slow down. What speed are you connected on with the wifi when it's folding?

Good point, especially as matty already lists it as a 54mbps card

it only puts about a 20% load on the 4th core on my CPU.. and the CPU client does nothing while running that..
running both of them together uses near 45~50% usage on the CPU.
    so i don't think it's the CPU.

the wireless speed is 54mbps while not using the GPU client, but as soon as it's acitvated, it drops down to 11mbps.
    reckon it's a shielding problem?

i have a pretty high end PC aswell.. so i don't think that it's gonna be a memory or disk bandwidth problem. but i may be wrong.

well.. it's homemade, and i'm just good with tools

    it's 11mbps while folding.
    and 54mbps while not folding.

the F@H things only upload/download data once they've finished a WU and they want another though, don't they?

Does sound like the card is producing enough EMI to interfere with your wireless.

Run a cable. end of problem.

some well good tools you must have then eh

Yeah F@H only uses the net for sending WU and receiving more data.

Re: my graphics card 1/8th's my download rate

So the network re-negotiates when you start folding? And the status readout changes from 54Mbps to 11Mbps?

If so, I would start looking at the driver options. Might be something in there that you can flag to stop this happening.....might even be worth playing with the various "offloading" settings the wireless card may have.
