Nvidia 9500GT and 300 watt PSU?

Will it work ? I have an AMD X2 4400+, 2 hard drives and no optical drive, no other expansion cards etc.

Re: Nvidia 9500GT and 300 watt PSU?

    what PSU is it?

it's not the wattage, its the quality and stability and stable amperage...

that system won't use more than 300w... but can that 300w PSU even give 300w?

Re: Nvidia 9500GT and 300 watt PSU?

I will say yes it can power it, but and this is a big but, I would not personally keep that PSU running my system for another minute.

Replace it this instant is my advice!

If yuo don't want to spend serious money (which I'm guessing you wont) then I would look to get one of these two PSUs

    Silverstone Strider 350w £28 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=696393...
    Corsair CX400W £38 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=893128...

Both are good quality units and will happily run your system for years to come.

Re: Nvidia 9500GT and 300 watt PSU?

Thanks, in my next system I will do that. carefully chosen £10-15 case/psu combos serve a lot of people very well though, I don't see a need for a PSU upgrade unless your PC contains premium parts e.g. £100 cpu, £100 gfx card etc.

Re: Nvidia 9500GT and 300 watt PSU?

A decent power supply is always a good idea no matter the cost of the components it is servicing.

The benefits are that a decent PSU will provide are,
Stable voltages within the correct tolerances - longer component life
Ability to provide the wattages advertised constantly, not for 3 seconds before exploding
Higher efficiencies = lower power bills
Better cooling - longer life and quieter
Safety precautions - prevent a PSU dying taking the whole system with it
Better distribution of power - Check your PSU and see how much of its power is available on the 12v rail, that is the important one.
    Better reliability and warranty

All of those things are worth £30 to me.

As a general rule of thumb the PSU should comprise of ~10% of the total PC budget so if your system costs £400 then the PSU should have been ~£40 of that, obviously this is only a guide.

Re: Nvidia 9500GT and 300 watt PSU?

Yes I agree with webby fully here and from experience, I've lost a graphics card and motherboard to the cheap case+psu combo before.
Although I've been lucky to advoid the "bursting into flames" that can often happen to these cheap PSU's

Now I'm not above buy such a case+psu combo, however I'd also buy a psu to replace the rubbish that's in it.
Doesn't have to be a a massive wattage or cost psu
Something like the sliverpower 350w http://www.ebuyer.com/product/104484 or 350w FSP http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=468725 will be far better and under £25

Just thought you may like to know Scan have some PSU's for cheap on today only (over the weekend),

The FSP Pob255 linked for £15.26 and the Silverstone I linked £22.31 and a 400W Silverpower (Tagen made) for £19.96.

It may power your system but im sorry to say, 'good' isnt a term i would use for the PSU you just bought.

    Cheap - Yep
    Low Quality - Definitely
    Good circuit protection - Marginal
As for SLI, thats complete nonsense. It would just overload it.

To be fair though, buying a PSU should be done this way. If you are prepared to lose the most expensive part in your system and can put up with instability, an 'el cheapo' PSU is the wway forward.

Good Luck though.....you may be ok

    sigh..

The Fortron Blue Storm is a top notch PSU for its very good, budget price.

If you fancy cancelling another order I would have gone with the Enermax instead

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/385W-...uard-SafeGuard

FSP do make ok power supplies on the whole though much better than an EZCool etc.

I agree with webby, best 3 PSU brands to go with are Enermax, Seasonic and Corsair (as their units are manufactured by seasonic ) But for gods sake, whatever you do, stay away from EZcool!!! Ive lost a system because of them, I found it hard to believe acer installed one of those c***py PSUs in a system.
