Personally i'd wait a while as it's still a good card. As long as the rest of your pc's up to spec it should be fine.
And welcome to Hexus.
Thanks for the reply
The rest of the system is still good but when the new Intel chips come out soon it will age quickly.
Your graphics card will be fine for a while yet on your 22" monitor, no need to upgrade for 6 months at least unless the is something you really want to play which your system is struggling on.
listen to Webby. he gives very good advice
No I can play everything at the moment but Christmas is coming and father Christmas needs a list.
1680x1050 ought to be fine...
save the cash and spend it on games instead
Looking at your current system the only thing worth upgrading would be the graphics and as I have already said that is no worth it at the moment.
You would have to move to a 4850X2 (not out yet) a GTX280 or a 4870X2 to see any marked improvement all of which are going to cost you £250 - £350.
It really is not worth upgrading at the moment.
I have overclocked everything in my case and had my first attempt at water cooling this year but as technology moves along will I get left behind.
ALSO
With Corei7 around the corner will prices fall?
You sound like you are wanting to buy through fear of 'being left behind'... Even if the i7 comes out and canes eveything else, its all relative to what you are doing with your PC now. If you are a gamer and the frames are acceptable, then why upgrade?
You will only get left behind if for some miraculous reason, games suddenly start taking advantage of all that perceived new power of the i7 and other cards, which, lets face it, isnt going to happen overnight...
There probably isnt one game that you cant play at highest settings right now with the rig in your signature, so maybe its best to sit tight for now until the next GPU generation. That way, you can see whethere your C2D subsystem would hold you back if you got the next generation GPU. If yes, then upgrade that too - or ask for it for Christmas next year :) - If no, then you just have to upgrade the GPU...
Mind you... if you upgrade, I'll gladly take any of your components off you! :)
I am just concerned that I have been away from computer gaming for so long that I will have to start from scratch once again when corei7 comes out. I had to start from scratch this time last year as my old system was so out of date it was good for nothing.
Having considered your very sensible words jonathan I agree that I should sit back and see what the next generation of processors bring.
BUT
If the bug for change does strike then the good people of HEXUS will get first refusal of my equipment. :)
Oh. My. God. Someone listened to me! :) That never happens!!!
In all honesty, I think thats a good choice. If you do start to fall behind (I dont know, maybe you like to apply loads of AA and AF and wont settle for less) then you could upgrade your GPU...
That will be a while, and at least that way, the i7 (And DDR3) prices might have come down a bit once all the early adopters have jumped in. And you can get an um... Easter present instead.
In the meantime, if you really Must have something, then maybe get a 24" monitor. You seem to have cutting edge stuff, so maybe you could upgrade that for Xmas... Mind you, you would definitely need to get a better GPU then... :) So just forget what I said...
I know how the buying buy is... just about to buy a Q6600 system from scan as we speak... not sure if I should press that buy button or not... :P
JP
PS. If you ignore me and buy - I want your RAM!!! :)
JP
Don't press the button yet.
I have been having a look around and there is word that Intel will soon be dropping the prices of their chips
I don't know if the Q6600 will be one of the chips that will be cheaper but I would hang on a few more weeks if you can to see what the prices do.
PS
Looks like the easter bunny will have to start saving now. :)
Gah - thats karma... I stop you buying - you stop me buying... !!! Really. Want. To. Buy. Now... :) What do you think guys? C2D prices likely to drop more... Its about £130 for a Q6600 already. Not sure if thats going to drop much more...
A couple of months back they were £105 (on offer) so they could drop more but with the pound weak against the dollar we will probably not see prices like that again for a while...
Agreed
World economy has gone to hell and the dollar is now stronger against the pound.
It is well documented on google about a price drop on 20th October 2008 by Intel and also another later in this month. Just hope now that the retailer pass these savings onto us.
Also, the larger cuts are going to be for £200 is CPUs, as thats the region that i7s will be stepping onto, with better perfomance... so those will have to be dropped. There will be less need to drop cheaper chips...
See how I am persuading myself that its ok to buy... :)
If you use that pholosophie then you will see the £200 CPUs drop in price and have something better than the Q6600.
Nah what will happen now is the Q6600 and Q6700 will go end of line, then the Q8200, Q9300, Q9400 will all filter down so they fill the gap maybe £130, £150, £175 the Q9550 with fall to maybe £200 and the Q9650 may drop down to say £300.
Until the new i7 chips fall below £200 I don't think you will see a better prices than those for the current quads.
All I know is don't follow me. Once I click on an order it is guaranteed to drop in price within a few days.
You arent that special :) That happens to ALL of us... Just make sure that you dont look for prices for about 3 months after - otherwise you'll kick yourself...
Despite having my order all ready online in my scan basket (just leaving it open at work, incase :)) I keep comin up against things... Cooler might not fit in the case, PSU 8-pin cable might not be long enough (PSU is at bottom of case) etc... and its delaying me buying.
Just want to get it out of the way, because its getting distracting now! Especially at work!!!
Sorry for the thread hijack (Although the title of the thread is still right, so I'm just being efficient :))
Not a problem. Did not realise it was a thread hijack.
If you don't mind discussing it? What is in your basket?
Don't expect Core2 prices to plummet. Intel still have a good money-spinner selling them for upgrades to the plethora of Core2 motherboard owners out there. Also, you won't be seeing a "budget" i7 system for a while yet, hence vendors will be selling Core2 systems for quite some time still.
I didn't think there were any game that push the q6600 if you overclock it to 3ghz
Heck there's hardly anything that pushes a c2d running at 3ghz.
Looks like I will be OK then as I have my Q6600 @ 3.54ghz (442 x 8)
Would like a little more but the system becomes unstable when running orthos.
Will have to ask the question one day and see if you very clever members can help me push my system to 3.6ghz.
Its chopping and changing, but to be honest, I might lose a little bit of money on the CPU by buying now, but I just want it out of the way tbh... There are other things I want to do except check on prices in the evening :) Anyway, heres what I'm getting:
Mobo: P5Q-E
CPU: Q6600
Case: Antec 300
RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS2 6400 C5
HDD: 640GB F1
HSF: Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120
From my exisiting system I will be taking:
GPU: 8800GTS 512
PSU: Hiper 580 Type M (No, not the Type R, no, it hasnt blown up. yet)
Monitor: Samsung 245B
Speakers: Creative T6100
After clearing up a few problems by doing some research, was gonna just buy now, but Scan have put the Q6600 up from £126 to £140 now... So going to have to look around. Which needless to say is a bit of a pain. Worst thing was that this time last night, I had everything in the basket ready to go, but found something that I had to research so I couldnt buy... Oh well... time to look around again...
Ebuyer are cheaper for the processor even with postage.
Just had a look myself and the price of the Q6600 has gone up everywhere, even on ebay?
Overclo**ers are also showing the ETA on Corei7 as 14/11/08 ?
JP have you sorted out the length of the 8 pin ATX cable?
I know for a fact that a Hiper 580 Type R will not fit with that case. (I know they are different power supplies but are the cable lengths the same)
Yeah - bit gutted, but hey, going to get one anyway. Going to go with a P5Q-E from another vendor, as Scan havent got any ETA on them. Hopefully will have all by Wednesday to try and put together...
In terms of the 8 pin cable, just going to get one from Scan (And also a 24-pin one too, so i can tidy the cables neatly round the edges) with all the other bits and pieces...
Maybe with them being end of line, and still being decent, demand is up, supply is down, and hence money is up too :( Briefly flitted with the thought of an 8400 or 8500, but gotta go Quad core while I can afford it :)
WOO HOO!!!
And I'm spent - literally... It may be end of line, it may be more expensive than 12 hours ago, it may be out of date technology, but what do I care, just bought it all for the princely sum of £444... which, as I'm chinese, happens to be really bad luck... but meh :) Lets hope it a) all gets here b) can actually overclock c) my mate wants my GTS so i can get a 4870 1GB...
But erm, yeah, YOU dont upgrade - that would be silly etc :) The moral is, do as I say, not as I do...
Nice to see the retailers are thinking of their customers and squeezing the last few pounds from us.
I think that's going to be the last of the really cheap q6600, as places were flogging off the last of the stock, they'll still be about for a short while but at higher prices (just like what happened with the e6600 when the 45mn cores came out)
Just before and just after new generation stuff comes out is often the best time to get bargins ;)
You should be able to pick up a good p35 motherboard at a low cost now
For people wanting Q6600s cheap or at least cheaper check Scans Shop offers £120 ;) http://www.scan.co.uk/ShopOffers/Index.aspx
Hmm. Going to call up Scan to see if they will just let me change the item? I've never really used that section before... If a Scan mod sees this then could they let me know if they think this is possible...
EDIT: I Love Scan customer service... spoke to a nice bloke, well actually he seemed well tired... and they have decided that that price is still valid and that they would honour it, so will let the existing order go through and then refund me the difference later. Top quality. Scan, I salute you! :)
nice prce...
i'd bite but i need a new mobo more...
I am happy you have managed to sort this out JP.
Have always found the people on the phone @ Scan very helpful. Only problem is what they say and then do are not always the same. :telephone:
Well, I'll have to check the credit card statement - but I have faith in Scan. They've never failed me! Got all the pieces and took a while on the build... the case i got isnt that large, so I spend ages on the cabling, and it now looks relatively neat.
One thing was that I was a bit disappointed with the cooler (Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120) but only because when I had put the AS5 on the CPU, i went to take off the label/cover on the bottom of the heatsink and it wasnt one of the nice easy-peel ones, and it left a load of sticky residue on the bottom.
It was about 3am and i just wanted the hardware to boot, and I didnt have any rubbing alcohol to clean it, so basically, I had to just rub it off by hand. I'm sure that this hasnt helped my temps (Or at least I hope thats why) but will redo it again, once i have settled on an OC...
Will post my findings in the Q6600 sticky or one of the many ones available - but basically can do:
- 350 FSB on 1.3v
- 375 FSB on 1.75v
so basically its about 3.4 ghz but the temps are quite high... but to until i install all my games again to test, wont know the diff. 3.2 or even 3 might be fine.
