Well having a scan around today I noticed that the 4850X2's are around for pre-order.
When Hexus announced that that they were coming and did a review of the 2GB model the was a bit of a discussion going on about pricing and how it was a bit on the steep side considering the price of the 4870X2 and the cost of buying 2x 4850s (assuming you have a crossfire supporting motherboard)
Anyway so some prices and links first the 4850X2 2GB
Scan - £322.66 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=911295
MoreComputers - £321.32 http://www.morecomputers.com/extra.asp?pn=11139-00-40R
LambdaTek - £318.26 http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...prodID=B166382
Now the 4850X2 1GB
MoreComputers - £279.37 http://www.morecomputers.com/extra.asp?pn=11139-01-40R
LambdaTek - £277.55 http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...prodID=B166390
So the 2Gb is averaging ~£321 and the 1GB ~£278
So what would 4850s cost to crossfire to achieve that?
1GB 4850 ~£140 so 2 cost £280 so to have a single card costs you £40
512MB 4850 ~£105 so 2 cost ~£210 so to have a single card costs you £70
Now if you look at the 4870X2 costs ~£350 and 2x 1GB 4870s cost ~£400 you actually save £50 by buying the single card!
Who is going to buy a 4850X2 2Gb when £30 more gets them a 4870X2 it makes no sense I tell you!
Right end of rant hopefully other manufacturers (only Sapphire's available atm) will have more realistic pricing it doesn't need to be cheaper than 2 cards but it does need to be comparable at the very least.
