    Which Crossfire mobo?

    My rig
    1. 22inch sumsung
    2. 460watt cooler master extreme (which i think il have to get bigger)
    3. 2gb ram
    4. windows xp, (but having vista 64bit, im going to instal that to get the DX10 features/effects)
    5. e7200
    6. sapphire 4850 ( with another spare to crossfire)
    7.GA-P35-S3G motherboard (non-crossfire obv )

Im thinking getting a new crossfire mobo and upgrading to a 750 watt corsair psu and getting another 2 gigs of ram

What you think about that? And which particular components would u recommend?

    cheers

you didn't really need to start a new thread, we could of kept going with the old one

To get the most performance out of a crossfire setup ideally you want to be looking at a motherboard with x38 or x48 chipset, however a good p35 or p45 motherboard will be fine and half the price.

You're looking at a cost of £100-110 the DFI lanparty is a ppopular option atm
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=884418

a lower cost option that seems good is the biostar tp45 hp at £84
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=906802

for psu any "good" 600ish watt unit will be fine.

however the big question is if you'll get much back at 22" resolutions, your current system shouldn't really be strugleing.

    And Welcome to Hexus

    Re: Which Crossfire mobo?

Okay since you already have the extra 4850 may as well make use of it

If you are going up to Vista 64 more RAM is always good

PSU - you will not need a 750W PSU, a decent 550W would be enough I would probably look for ~600W to be really safe and achieve higher efficiency.

Motherboards you need to be looking at P45 as a minimum obviously with 2x PCIe slots ~£85+ or X38 or x48 boards which vary a lot in price but £120+ is a safe bet.

    Re: Which Crossfire mobo?

It is a difficult one to call (well not that difficult) the are a number of possible outcomes.

    1. Your current 4850 runs the game at full detail settings with AA and AF on full at 60fps+
    2. Your current 4850 runs the game at full detail settings with AA and AF on full at less than 60fps
    3. Your current 4850 runs the game at less than full detail settings and or with AA and AF off or not at max at 60fps+
    4. Your current 4850 runs the game at less than full detail settings and or with AA and AF off or not at max at less than 60fps

In situation 1 you will see no benefit
In situation 2 you will see a frame rate increase which will make gameplay smoother
In situation 3 you will be able to increase the detail settings and or AA and AF for a better visual experiance
In situation 4 you will get better framerates and you maybe able to increase detail settings.

The majority of games will fall into catergories 2,3 and 4 so you will in most cases see a benefit by having the second card if that is worth the ~£200 the card cost you and the new motherboard is debatable but since you already have the card unless you can sell it for a decent return it makes sense to use it.

Oh and back to motherboards don't get a P35 board they only offer 4x PCIe for the second slot which is bad for crossfire performance.

    Umm not right webby
Some p35 are x8 x8 some are x16 x4 depends on the board

eg Asus Blitz is p35 and has x8 x8

    Re: Which Crossfire mobo?

    Ok, think im sorted

    - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150909 - Same one is 12 quid cheaper on scan but rather buy from ebuyer...

    Any recommendations, changes?
    - Its the same as my other ram, so cant change that obv, and i think the PSU is a gd quality one and will be enough to supply my 4850's

    Re: Which Crossfire mobo?

Yeah PSU and MB are fine

You could (and I would) get 4GB of the slightly slacker timing memory for £40 and then sell your current stuff if you wanted to this would allow you to upgrade your memory in the future if you wanted to.

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130429 or http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132904

Oh and to the P35 issue I believe the Blitz is the only P35 board that could do that it required an extra chip to get round the limitations of the chipset.
