    Water block for 4850

    Hi all.

I recently bought a Gigabyte HD4850 1gig, and am looking to watercool it. So far all of the blocks i can find are full coverage ones, thus they are about £50+, so what I want to know is, does anyone know of a compatible water block for just the GPU? I thought i'd just use RAM sinks to cool the rest as my case has decent airflow.

    Thanks for reading,
    Max

    Re: Water block for 4850

what's wrong with just getting a full coverage thing, if you cool the RAM aswell as the GPU you'll be able to overclock the RAM on the card a lot further than it's originally made for.

there's a lot of GPU blocks out there for the 4850 though, i'm sure. (i'll go and have a bit of a search for you )

i'm pretty sure that any block that fits the 4870 will also fit the 4850 aswell, but i'd like someone to back me up/prove me wrong on that

That is a GPU only block that says it's compatible with the 4850/4870. Sadly out of stock at the moment but they do exist.

EDIT: In stock here but I've not used coolercases.co.uk before so I don't know if they're a reliable retailer.

Any GPU only block will, the physical chip (RV 770) is the same size on both cards and has the same mounting holes around it. Full card blocks won't be compatible with both as they have slightly different board layouts in terms of MOSFETS and RAM I believe.

    Re: Water block for 4850

Nope full cover blocks are card specific (with the apparent exception of the GTX280/260) and the 4870 and 4850 are different enough that you need a block designed for each one.

As to a GPU only block that will fit look no further than the Swiftech MCW60, D-Tek Fuzion GFX (v1 and v2) or the EK Supreme VGA. Personally I have an MCW60 on my 3870 and even under full load the GPU never exceeds 42°C even when the room is warm, GPUs tend to be volt limited though rather than heat limited so don't expect massive overclocks just because you water cool it.

See here for a selection of blocks http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/...me.php?cat=577 or here http://www.chilledpc.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=113_39.

    Re: Water block for 4850

Thanks guys. My problem with full cover blocks is that they're so damn expensive! I don't plan to overclock the card much, i'd rather it lasted longer, so I think RAM sinks would be ok

EDIT: ah, £34 for the GPU only heatsink! So it's basically only a tenner more for a full cover cooler... hmm

Apparently if you don't want to overclock very much then watercooling is a waste of money.

But I beg to differ! It looks amazing, and there's a rumor going around that running water keeps werewolves away...

    Nah you're thinking of vampires

For werewolves you'd need sliver waterblocks

    Re: Water block for 4850

Um... thanks for that guys. The system it's going into is already watercooled, the case is modded to support that, and the CPU is overclocked, so yes - there is a point in it being watercooled.

Oh, and it's next to silent, and looks damn good too

Haha ! I'm an advocate of watercooling, I think it's awesome!

Not everyone wants to spend the money on it, but it's well worth it if you are into computers!

Better than spending £5000 on a car upgrade!

People who like cars spend £50,000 on high performance ones, some even buy £500,000 McClarens!

Why should we be told we're crazy for spending £2000 on something that is amazing and latest tech?!

    [edit:

I posted a final thread, detailing the final version of my PC... and thanking everyone who helped me along the way.

The thread can be found here.

Thanks everyone for all of your help and expertise!

Once everything arrives and I put it together, I'll let you know how it turns out, and maybe upload some photos, and also post the scores and overclocking that it achieves. I don't know enough about computers yet to do this by myself, I have my good friend Moogle who is going to help me, so all build + overclocking credit goes to him ]
