I'm planning to buy a PS3 and upgrade my current 22" LG L226WTQ monitor to something I can use with both console (via HDMI) and PC (DVI). I'd prefer not to spend more than £500. I mostly use the PC for software and web development, browsing the net, and watching DVDs. I'm not a huge gamer (BD sold me on the PS3) but it will be nice to be able to play a game for half an hour without having to boot into and faff about with Windows (I use Linux). It needs to comfortably allow a couple of people to watch at the same time but TBH I've never noticed a problem with viewing angles (horizontally at least) on my current monitor.
I'm having trouble determining what screen size to go for. I wouldn't mind having a slighter sharper picture than my 22" panel (0.282mm pixel pitch) for working which suggests a 24" (0.270mm) but I watch DVDs, and expect I'll play games, from about 2m away so I expect I'd appreciate the bigger area of a 25.5" (0.287mm) or 27" (0.303mm). I can't find anywhere locally with anything bigger than 24" to look at in person so I'd appreciate the comments of those of you that do.
N.B. I never regretted moving from a 17" 4:3 monitor (0.264mm) to 19" (0.294mm). Indeed I actually find text to be sharper on my 19" than my 22" (in a dual desktop configuration) so I probably a) have something set up wrong and b) am worrying way too much about this!
Based on all this I've identified the following monitors:
Dell 2408WFP
Samsung SM-T260 (or SM-T260HD)
Dell 2709W
Your thoughts would be gratefully received.
P.S. I have gazed longingly at the 30" Dell 3008WFP: bigger screen, bigger resolution (2650x1600), sharper pixel pitch (0.250mm), but I'd be nervous enough about the Dell panel lottery I keep reading about when spending £500 - never mind upwards of a grand!
