Just sold my 4870 512MB, what should I get now?

So, just got £135 for my HD4870, which I think is quite reasonable. Question now is, what should I replace it with? I have a 27" Dell (1920x1200 res) and I found the 4870 would occasionally struggle with all the eye candy maxed out (games like GRID etc).

So... should I go all out with a 4870X2 (£350)? Or maybe 2 x 1GB 4850 in Crossfire (£290)... the extra £60 won't break the bank, so I probably should just go for that right?

I may end up watercooling my PC, so I guess if I go Crossfire I'll have to get two blocks, so this should be factored in I suppose?

    What do you think?

Probably agree with above, I thought I might give a GTX260 216 a go next as it has far better frame rates in FSX than the 4870's. However you would be looking at 2 of them to get any faster than you already had.

I did consider this, but I think the extra memory is what I need for my resolution... maybe I should just get a single 4870 1GB?

I think anything less than a 4870X2 2Gb wouldn't make much sense now you've sold the 4870. I highly doubt the 512Mb memory was the limiting factor though.

The 4870X2 is the fastest single graphics card available, treat yourself if you can afford it.

What else could've been causing slowdowns in C&C3? I have 6GB of RAM, an overclocked Q6600 (3.4Ghz) and the game really slows down when the PC opponent throws 30+ Orcas at me along with innumerable ground troops... don't know how to measure frame rates in game but it's definitely unplayable for a few seconds (until I kill them all )

Re: Just sold my 4870 512MB, what should I get now?

Well, you could go for the 4850X2, as it seems to be quite a good card, near GTX280 performance, and, for a much lower price, although, prices seem to be a bit high in the UK,
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-S...DVI-I-x-4-HDMI
It also provides better performance than crossfire 4850's, with far more consistant min frame rates
Or, you could go for the GTX260 216, very good performance, although, its a little overpriced.....

    Just me.......

Not sure if the C&C3 engine is all that great TBH. I experienced the same although less so when I moved from an 8800GTX to a 4870 (512Meg) @1920x1200. It was better again, although not smooth 100% of the time when I upgraded to a 4870x2 but then the resolution also went up a lot (2560x1600) so not exactly comparing apples to apples here. Not convinced a new GFX will cure your C&C3 woes.

Ahhh what the heck, you only live once, I shall get the best on the market at the moment... hopefully it won't be superseded next week! On this... what does the rumour mill say? Does Nvidia have some killer card about to land in Jan/Feb?

Trouble is something better will always be around the corner when it comes with hardware if you can aford it get the best their currently is. If you wait for Nvidia to release their next big thing then you will be waiting for Ati's counter and it goes on forever.
