Which 4850? Need a bit help from the people in the know

I have decided I want a 4850, the problem is which one the get and Is it a bit overkill for 1440x900?

I’ve heard the stock cooling is a bit pants and would prefer a dual slot which exhausts the air outa my case like this iceQ

is this cooler worth the extra or should i go with the saphire sacrificing the dual slot for the extra 512 ram?

I’m willing to pay up to £150 but would appreciate it if I could save a few extra pound as I’m out of a job in 2 weeks.

Any help would be great as I don’t really have time to compare all the different specs on the cards.

    People!

firstly, i'm sorry to hear about the job loss; wish you luck in finding a new job too

well tbh, i reckon the 4850 is total overkill for that resolution, but afterall, it's up to you what you want to buy and if you do go for the 4850 it'll last you longer than a cheaper one will.

if you want to save a bit of money and still get very good performance, what about the 4830?

    HD 4830
    HD 4850 (Dual-Slot)
or for a nVidia spin on things..

Unless you want to future proof your rig a bit, the 4850 is overkill at that resolution.

Sorry to hear about the job situation mate I am sure a lot of people are in the same boat but good luck in finding a new one.

While the 4850 might be a bit overkill at the moment for your resolution I would say buy the best card you can aford because you never know their maybe a chance of getting a better monitor in the future. I iceQ does look a nice card but I got a 4870 a few weeks ago for only £166 with a custom cooler and pre overclocked to think that for an extra £14 I got a card so much better makes the IceQ seem overpriced.
Still the price of hardware is on the up so it is a bit of an unfair comparison, if you can afford the IceQ then I would favour it from the selection other than that even a stock 4850 should be ok as long as you avoid the Palit version which is ment to be fairly loud.

    strike-down I enjoy being stalked

I didn’t even know about the 20 posts thing I’m defiantly going to be making sure I get 20 posts soon.

I don’t think I’m going to need to get a dual slot cooler as I have 120 mm exhaust fan and a 120 mm intake which hopefully should shift the hot air from and internally blowing cooler.

you guys think ill have any issues?

the new card will help me waste away my days as an unemployed bum

Re: Which 4850? Need a bit help from the people in the know

I'd keep my eye open for a second hand 8800GT 512Mb / 8800GTS 512mb if you're on a tight budget - they're happily run anything at 1440 x 900. I was play crysis at 1600x1200 avg 30fps on mine before I switched. You could expect to pay about £60 for one.

    Edit:
    http://forums.hexus.net/classifieds-...-vid-card.html

If you fancy offering £40 this is a very nice (and quiet if it's the Asus brand). This should provide a nice performance boost over the 8600GTS you currently have, and save you a fair bit as well.

    8600GTS = 5901
    8800GS 384Mb (see HD3870 as they're roughly equivalent in performance) HD3870 = 10399 = £40 second hand (BARGIAN!!!)

    For comparison

    8800GT 512mb = 11109 = £100 approx. new
    HD4850 512mb = 11749 = £110 approx. new

Re: Which 4850? Need a bit help from the people in the know

I would have to say,a while the 4850 is overkill for that resolution, I suppose you could say its a little more future proof, and will mean you wont have to upgrade as soon as you would if you bought a lower end card, such as the 4830, or whatever.....
However, cptwhite does have a good deal......
Its a good card at that resolution, or you could go for the 9800GT, £90, might provide a nice inbetween card, as in powerful enough for the resolution, without costing more than you need, so no money/power is wasted....

    Just me......

Re: Which 4850? Need a bit help from the people in the know

That IceQ 4850 was on today only at Scan the other day for about £140 I think. If that's the one you fancy, it might be worth waiting until it comes up again...

I've got the IceQ 1950, and I'm very pleased with it. Looking to upgrade to one of the newer cards now but at the time it offered a lot more performance for not much more money...
