    Powercolor 4870 512mb PCS+ is rather loud!

    Hi guys,

Well basically after reading some reviews about it I decided to purchase one over the sapphire toxic (which is about £30~ more) and upon finally plugging it in, the fan makes a god awful racket, as if the ball bearings used are dead (probably not but thats the impression I get)...and on top of that, the fan is apparently running at 7% and its no where near under 27dB.

Now maybe I have a bad cooler, got unlucky and they arent all like this, but it still sucks.
The people that said this is quiet are clearly hearing impaired.

What I want to know is if there's an official BIOS update for this card at all?
(I found this on the comments section http://www.dataland.com.cn/bios/hd4870a.rar - from here but have no info on its legitimacy.

Any direction or info on this would help.

    Thanks.

I'd check carefully, some one else here got a Club3D card recently, which uses the same cooler, however the cooler was bent and the fan was clipping the fins, which made a racket.

All told something seems to be wrong.

Hmmm I dont think anything is clipping, but the cooler did look like its out of place, EVER so slightly. I'll take pics I guess and post.
I also felt the fins spinning (you know when you put your finger close enough to JUST clip the fins) well they seem to be spinning faster than 1500RPM

I'll also contact scan and see what they say.

The Powercolor PCS+ 4850 is listed on that chart as the quietest under load, do you have a review of the 4870 with a db rating like that?

imagine running that 46db card.. how do they get away with selling things that bad .

Re: Powercolor 4870 512mb PCS+ is rather loud!

No I dont have a review stating its noise levels on idle and load unfortunately. I was merely assuming by my ear and what I know to be 20dB or less. The 4850 has a different cooler on it though, so that would be why. And yes how they go from doing that to the 4870 being shockingly loud is beyond me, but I REALLY do think I have a duff card.

Edit: although I did find this go half way down.

Also Im now looking at alternative cards, such as the sapphire toxic and their noise levels, and it looks like they are all loud...
I guess an aftermarket cooler purchased separately might be in order.

    erm... no it doesnt:

That cooler is however different from the 4850 and the 4670, though.
