Dell SP2309W and ATI Radeon 4850

    Hello everyone,

Just a quick query - I recently ordered a Dell XPS Studio machine with an ATI Raedon 4850 card.

I am looking to buy a monitor to go with the machine. The monitor I am interested in is the Dell SP2309W (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...hs1&sku=193757).

Looking at ATI's website, I notice that the 4850 card supports a resolution of up to 1920 by 1200 (http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd4800/specs.html).

    1) The Dell SP2309W has a resolution of 2048 by 1152. Since this is a higher resolution than that listed for the ATI card, does that mean that the 4850 card will struggle to support this monitor? (apologies if my questions sound silly - I don't know much about monitor quality and resolutions).

    2) Also does anyone own a Dell SP2309W? - is it any good - there doesn't seem to be much info on it online since it is new. The 2ms repsonse time looks really nice for gaming.

    3) There is a lower model - the S2309 (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...hs1&sku=184923) which is nearly £100 cheaper than the SP2309W. The S2309 has a resolution of 1920 by 1080. Would this go better with the ATI card, since this falls into the limits of the resolution supported by the card? - although it doesn't have the 2ms response time :-(

I look forward to any replies,

    Thank you.

    1920 x 1200 = 2,304,000
    2048 x 1152 = 2,359,296

Not much difference, i think a 4870 would be better for gaming at larger resolutions like this anyway but...

I'm pretty sure the 4850 has dual link dvi so it should support upto 2560 x 1600 anyway afaik, let somebody confirm though.

    It's 4.98*

Yep the 4850 will support duel link DVI so resolutions up to 2560*1600

The only issue will be when playing games as the 4850 may struggle a bit if you want high detail settings and AA etc on at native resolution of course you can always lower the resolution and have the monitor stretch the image or make it pixel map (either via the monitor if it supports it or the graphics drivers) so you have a black border in those games that you want to run higher detail settings/lower resolution for whatever reason.

Re: Dell SP2309W and ATI Radeon 4850

Thanks for the replies. I think it may be safer if I go for a 20 inch or 22 inch monitor with lower resolutions.

SP2009W has caught my eye now :-) 2ms response time and 1680 by 1050 (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...hs1&sku=178232). Hopefully the 4850 card covers that.

Or to be completely safe with playing games at high settings, I suppose a 19 inch monitor may be better... hmmm

http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...hs1&sku=184923 is a fantastic monitor for the price, cheaper than the 20", 3ms more response time but it doesnt matter as long as its under 8ms you have no ghosting anyway...

    It's 4.98*

Re: Dell SP2309W and ATI Radeon 4850

Having thought about this, I have a Samsung 20 inch monitor attached to another PC. For me, thats nice but can feel a little too big at times.

So now I am considering a 19 inch widescreen monitor for my Dell Studio XPS PC - at least will provide better fps. I am looking at LG vs Dell:

    LG W1952TQ (2ms, 10,000:1 ratio) http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx...1109,420830000

This also seems to be listed at Comet as a LG W1952TQ-PF (http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/pro...ification#spec) with 5ms - although I presume this is a mistake, since other sites still list 2ms! Not sure what the PF adds or takes away from this model.

    Dell UltraSharp 1909W (5ms, 1000:1 ratio) (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...hs1&sku=195605)

The Dell is more expensive and has poorer specs, but... it is height adjustable, supports more colours and I hear people saying lots of good things about the Ultrasharp series of monitors...

What does everyone think?? LG vs Dell.

Hi, i might be a little late on this one, but just to let know that i have the Dell SP2309W and an ATI 4850 and the games run perfectly fine..

Lead 4 Dead is running at Maximum Resolution with all the settings at Max -- no probs
Counter Strike source, all valve games and also Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 running flawlessly fine..

Not sure about new games such Fear 2, or Cysis, but then Crysis is a PC killer on any resolution..
